Re: Family Doctors - What's normal.
I used to drink very frequently with the Dr who did my pr medical here in Newf - It was a very strange situation having someone you drink with checking your bits etc :D
I still use his place for my Bi-Yearly offshore medical |
Re: Family Doctors - What's normal.
You should try working with the people that treat you...
Actually it's fine - as long as you have confidence in their ability, but then that applies to anyone. People soon get into professional mode and it doesn't matter. If I have to x-ray someone I know if there's another tech then I usually ask them to do the deed, just to avoid any awkward moments later. |
Re: Family Doctors - What's normal.
It just seems not right having a conversation about the darts in the bar with someone while he is checking you dont have anything wrong with your groin :)

Re: Family Doctors - What's normal.
Last year I went for a mammogram at our local hospital, and whilst my boobies were beng squashed in the machinery the radiographer announced she was my neighbour and lived several houses along the road :o.
Later that same week I had an appointment for a pap test (cervical smear) and I had already decided that if my gynaechologist lived across the road then I was leaving town :o ........................... thankfully I am still here  |
Re: Family Doctors - What's normal.
There are a few people on here that could be patients in the place where I work.
The thing is that they could tell everyone all about me, but I must say nothing at all about seeing them at the hospital. Even if they were just walking down the corridor. |

Re: Family Doctors - What's normal.
I never did find a family doctor accepting patients in my 5 years, so I always used walk in clinics, and even those I knew with family doctors used mostly walk-in clinics as there was always a 1-2 week wait for an appointment and well if your sick that wont work.
Family doctors are best for chronic on-going conditions, and walk in's for things like ear aches, sore throats and illness thats not chronic. Some citys usually smaller ones dont have many walk in clinics or the ones they do have very limited hours, so the ER is the walk in clinic. But mileage may vary and its different experience city to city and province to province. I find it strange that people use the ER for non-emergency visits with a doctor, and even stranger that doctors don't do house calls especially in the case of frail/elderly people. I dont know why anyone would expect a doctor to be on call anytime they need one, thats why the ER exists and why walk in clinics exist. Doctors deserve to have regular work hours just like anyone else once they are done with training. |

Many people are unable to go wait at the ER or walk-in clinic, eg when my grandmother in the UK broke her hip she had home visits once she was released from hospital because a few days later she had an infection. It's too much to expect elderly or vulnerable people to go wait at the ER or a walk-in clinic. There are all kinds of people, post-surgery or very ill that can't make it to a clinic or doctors office. |

I am sure that they can manage a roster that will allow a doctor to work a reasonable amount of hours per week at a doctor's office and be 'on call' on certain days. Shift work is hardly a new concept. A lot of people like myself don't work regular hours. I work in mental health and my roster covers shifts 24/7, 7 days a week including eg Christmas day - it's comes with the job.

And there are programs for home visits but they probably involve a nurse or other medical professional to change dressing, check ups etc. You dont need a doctor for that. Its a bit much to expect doctors to do house calls, this is not 1950 anymore. |

Most doctors are self employed and choose when they want to work, and most in North America have decided they dont want to work on call once in their own practice and I dont blame them.

Most people still work M-F 9-5 type shifts. Or there are just a crap load of people taking scenic drives every morning.
Do you really expect the nursing/lab/radiology/clerical/maintenance/security/housekeeping/portering/medical/physio staff to be there for you but not a precious GP? |
