Default Exchange rate Cn$1.8022/£1

This devaluation of the Canadian dollar must be a Govt initiative, it can't be through the usual circumstances of currency variation. Anyone have any proof that it is a deliberate attempt to devalue the currency? Is Canada trying to make its exports cheaper?

Tis of interest indeed. Will certainly make any trips home a bit more pricey.

Isn't the historical average somewhere closer to $2?

A'int that the truth. My interest these days is in spending CAD$ when in UK. Glad we have no family travel planned for this year to UK. Starts getting expensive!

Don't be daft, did you see the employment figures today?

The UK economy is now starting to improve so basically the exchange rate is starting to move back to a more typical level, sterling has been at an historically low rate for the last five years against the Canadian dollar.

Been saying on here for years that moving to Canada from the UK doesn't make sense if you're bringing lots of money with you, because essentially you're buying high and then selling low, because the Canadian dollar will drop in value sharply.

According to the bbc business section, the £ weakened against every world currency except the currencies from Ukraine, Argentina and Canada. Not daft, something is afoot to devalue the Cn$. 20% in 6 months, this is deliberate.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to see it go to $2.5 to £ but this is unlikely, just trying to work put who what or why this is happening so I can plan accordingly.

Selfishly, I hope not. It has been like a 30% discount on everything we buy. If it goes back to that, we'll likely stop buying in the UK and look elsewhere.

Not sure about the pound, but I think our low $ is a natural fluctuation. There's no plot, it's just a bump. Natural disasters can halt parts of the economy - if farmland is under water they aren't buying fertilizer and our mines (which were multiplying) are enduring shutdowns. The steel & pipe mill here just announced mass lay-offs because there aren't enough rail cars available to get pipe to the customers. It's middle of winter so housing starts are down, there's been a crisis of faith in the US government and our $ is joined at the hip to theirs. Our pols aren't crying because crappy as a 92c dollar is, as you said it makes our exports more saleable and we'll take any sales right now. Poor exchange with the US stops some crossborder bleeding too. Is the government even capable of manipulating exchange with the pound? If the $ lost 20% vs the pound in 6 months it may not all come back, but I'd guess half should within the next 6 months, and while I'd like to see a 97c cdn $ vs the US in the same time I think 95 is more likely, all due to natural causes, not manipulation. I'm not a player and just base this on what I've seen.

CAD:GBP rate has been on a sustained climb since early summer.

Can't see it getting to $2 myself, but it would be handy from a house-buying point of view.

Got a house and an apartment up for sale in England and a sub-£100k sum waiting to transfer over at the moment...

Yes... and the only bit that matters there is that sterling weakened against the Canadian dollar - now it's strengthening. As is the US dollar. From the Bank of Canada website:

As you can see from that, starting when the recession hit in 2008, sterling dropped in value, now it's recovering. Hasn't been above $2 since August 2008.

There is no conspiracy.

Same is happening to the CAD against the USD, I am hoping it doesn't fall to far between now and September as I am going to visit family, and may have to cut back on the time spent there if CAD falls too far.
