On the BBC website it's saying that IS have claimed responsibility.

Re: Egypt Air - Lost
Not lost now, confirmed crashed, it suffered catastrophic damage at 30,000 feet, eye witnesses said seen flash in sky, and the beacon is now beeping (the one that beeps when it hits water)
Not heard about the IS link here yet BTW

Plane movements 'suggest incident in cockpit'
Posted at 07:28
What this does suggest is that it is more of an incident in the cockpit itself of that aircraft. It does suggest it wasn't necessarily blown out of the sky by a missile potentially... it wasn't necessarily a device on board. It would suggest that the pilot has been involved in some way in an incident in the cockpit."

From the guardian:
Rukmini Callimachi, the New York Times journalist who focuses on Islamic State, says there is no claim of responsibility as yet or anything to indicate that IS terrorism is to blame for the plane’s disappearance.
It’s worth noting that IS claimed responsibility for the downing of Metrojet Flight 9268 over the Sinai on October 31 by that afternoon.

Not exactly an awesome day to be flying...
Wife, sister-in-law and father-in-law currently on way back from Davao then Manila to Vancouver and mother-in-law on way back from Davao then Manila to Malaga after a family funeral in Davao
Hopefully they didn't hear about this - they would have all been at Davao airport when that happened...
I know there are thousands of planes in the air at any one time and that Egypt is an IS target, but then so are white westerners in the Philippines targets of crazy Islamists...Davao is where the recent kidnappings took place there...

Deaths per billion miles. (Source Out Of These Nine Modes, Which Is The Safest Way To Travel?)
Motorcycles: 125 Walking: 41 Bicycles: 35
Ferries: 20 Space Shuttle: 7 Cars: 4
Airplanes: 0.5 Buses: 0.5 Trains: 0.2
Still a very safe means of travel even though, like many road traffic and firearm deaths, the deaths of the Egyptair plane probably result from misdeeds by others.
I see that, like other news channels, CNN has moved into full coverage mode ignoring the daily slaughter in the US due to gun violence and in Syria and other war zones resulting from indiscriminate bombings. It has even swept the Donald Trump gravy train from the screen and replaced them with the terrorist and aircraft safety gravy train.
Whatever happened to informative journalism?

It's news for the same reason we're still looking for MH370: the long-term economic impact could amount to billions of dollars.
As for 'gun violence', they won't report it because of who commits most of it.

I don't think this is ignoring some things in favour of others.
It's temporarily leaving stories that are ongoing or feature a series of similar incidents so much so that they are familiar, and going instead for something a lot more isolated and, therefore, more newsworthy.
It's why it's called The News.
