My dog has sensitive skin and allergies. Are the same dog food brands - Eukenuba, Iams etc available in Canada as in the UK? I guess they would be as they are owned by global organisations, but just wanted to check in case I need to look for an alternative.

Thanks.

We have our girl Sasha on food we collect from the vet practice called Medical. Our breeder recommended it and she seems to be great on it, touch wood, a little pricier but she's worth it!. They carry a vast range of hypo food to suit all conditions.

They probably aren't doing it right. I know a lot of people just can't be bothered researching the food and they think they are dong BARF if they throw down the odd bit of bone, but it has to be done properly so the dogs are getting the right nutrients.

I sit quite a lot of pets on raw now and they are all in great shape. The great thing here in Edmonton at least is that a lot of the premium pet food stores sell the raw food patties, so the owners don't have to think too much about getting the right mix.

For the dog with allergies, Natural Balance has a range of allergy formula's - they have better ingredients than the prescription allergy foods and are way cheaper. http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dog...s/allergy.html There are quite a few other premium brands doing limited ingredient formula's now for pets with allergies and Natural Balance, Orijen, California Natural and Eagle Pack are popular choices.

My cats didn't like raw, I have them on a mixture of Timberwolf Serengeti, Orijen, and Innova Evo, dry foods (because two of them are dry food addicts and were when I got them) and several different canned foods, mainly grainless, with the exception of Eagle Pack which has oats I think, but it's their absolute favourite ;-)

A lot of vets recommend commercial food because they make money from it. EG. Hills science which is absolute rubbish. I believe that the dogs digestive system is best suited to raw meat, bones & veg. & our dog has been well on it.
We are still in the U.K at present & what i meant by "especially for dogs" was a firm that prepares raw meat for dogs. We buy it from a supplier in UK for dogs in 1/2 kg individual bags. The meat is chicken, tripe, beef, lamb or anything. I just wondered if there was a similar supplier near Calgary

Anita, Tailblazers have stores in Calgary and up here in Edmonton at least they sell a fairly wide range of raw foods for dogs. Global pet foods in our area are also getting the raw foods in but I don't think they have a Calgary store yet. If it's anything like Edmonton there are probably quite a lot of raw food stockists.

Not sure if anyone has replied yet to the question re bringing dog food into Canada - sorry if repeating anyone. I brought with me just enough food to tide the dog over while I weened him onto something Canadian. I got moaned at by Customs for not leaving his dog food in the sealed and original package where they could see if it had British Beef in it! American beef apparently is fine and wonderful, but they dont want any of our dodgy British beef in the country!!! That said, if I remember correctly they let me bring it thru as I said it was lamb and they didn't do a taster to check LOL.

I don't really get why you would need to go to a special supplier for raw meat for your dog. My mother always fed our family dogs on raw meat and Winalot, and the meat was from the butchers, mostly ox hearts and pigs liver left from their preparation of carcasses. The dogs seemed pretty healthy, and we enjoyed throwing them the meat in chunks, and watching them catch it and gollup it down. They seemed as healthy as anyone else's dogs and lived to a good age (plus I really don't remember much in the way of smell, when you fed them, or after).

My 2 are on BARF
weekly visit to the butchers and we get a box of assorted "Bits" - the skinned rabbits head was quite entertaining for the kids - but as the dogs catch squirrels in the park they werent too phased!
we supplement with fresh veg and fruit, yog, eggs - basically whatever is left in the fridge and has maybe gone past its best for our consumption.

Dogs have ashorter oesophagus and stronger enzymes in their gut etc so they dont suffer with salmonella - in the uk we just have to be careful with raw pork as they could have a tape worm.

Ours are v healthy and it enjoy watching them chwoing down on a big cow thigh bone!! (in the garden I may add!!)
