Friends of ours feed their labs on the barf diet, and their coats look dull, energy levels are low, and seeing unfinished, half chewed chunks of bone with flies buzzing around them on their patio never seems a particularly healthy way to feed a pet, IMO.

That's my problem...I am looking for what's best for my mutt.

there are lots of opinions about raw v dry/commercial food. The risk of torsion with dry food etc. & risk of feeding bones, but you need to weigh up the evidence & decide. A lot of vets recommend commercial food because they make money from it. EG. Hills science which is absolute rubbish. I believe that the dogs digestive system is best suited to raw meat, bones & veg. & our dog has been well on it.
We are still in the U.K at present & what i meant by "especially for dogs" was a firm that prepares raw meat for dogs. We buy it from a supplier in UK for dogs in 1/2 kg individual bags. The meat is chicken, tripe, beef, lamb or anything. I just wondered if there was a similar supplier near Calgary

When we were urban we threw Charlie (the dog) a raw chicken but he seemed baffled by it. We're not about to do that now as the last thing we want is a dog eating the livestock.

He will eat a leg of lamb, the trick being to set it up as if it's about to be cooked for human consumption.

Our elderly collies get Hills JD (http://www.vetuk.co.uk/index.php?mai...62151e473f5225) which keeps them very active, and healthy - both still chase our ATV at 40kms/hr and they're noticeably less sore/stiff after a busy day than when they were on a different food.

I don't care if the vet profits from selling me food, he's in business to make money. What matters is the dog's health, and having 2 dogs for over 13yrs with no major health issues seems a reasonable trade for apparent 'rubbish'

My daughter's dog had similar problems, plus some. The dog is now vegetarian, they buy the feed from Bosley's (don't know if they are Canada-wide, but lots of outlets in BC) and it is now the healthiest, energetic, ailment-free dog with a lovely glossy coat! No meat or meat by-products at all. She is thriving.

You can get raw dog food products here as well as a whole range of dry foods too.

I go to a locally owned pet food shop, for every 12 bags of food I buy I get a free one. If I buy treats that Henry doesn't like I can take them back for a full refund.

I currently feed Solid Gold Wolfking which is bison and salmon flavour and no fillers.

Here is a chart to help you 'rate' the food for your furkid!http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

Here's a link providing the veterinarians in the Kelowna area - thought it might be helpful to you. Most of the clinics have higher quality dog food that you can purchase.
