I would definitely pay to have my dress shirts ironed.

1 min 39 secs? It takes me about 10-15 minutes to get a proper cotton double-cuffed shirt ironed.

So at that speed you could do 5 shirts for me in about 8 1/2 minutes. So if you charged $20/hour, you could iron my weeks work shirts for $2.83. SOLD!!!! :D

In the same vein not many polish their shoes either.

You reminded me of how my Dad irons his smart trousers - the brown paper comes out & they have creases you can cut your finger on

Just as well my Mum does the ironing, it takes him an age just to do one pair of trousers - he's a stickler for polished shoes too :D

I used to have a steam generator type iron in the UK which was great. When we moved out here I tried to find one but couldn't. No-one seemed to know what I was even talking about. When it came to buying a normal one none of the woman working in the store could recommend a good one as none of them used an iron. I still iron but less that I used to. In some areas it is not permitted to hang washing outside so clothes have to come out of the drier and on to hangers so no need for the iron in most cases.

Not sure what you mean by "steam generator type" but virtually all irons sold in Canada are steam irons.

Here's a link to Sears web site they list 17 irons and 15 of them are listed as steam irons.

Cheers

It's not a normal steam iron. You have a large water tank that is separate and that heats the water and the steam is forced through to an iron. Normally the water goes in the iron. So with this type of iron you have an iron attached by a tube to the water tank and the steam goes from the water tank part into the iron. Provides much more steam so makes ironing quicker and the iron itself doesn't have to get that hot as it doesn't have to heat the water so less chance of burning clothes. Bit bulky but great for doing the ironing. Thank you for taking the trouble to look at the Sears website - I'll check there again but I'm pretty sure they won't have one.

Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs - Sears now have an iron I was looking for - Delonghi Professional Iron system - bit steep at $206 but they are worth their weight in gold. I searched high and low for one of these (yes even Sears) last year and couldn't fine one. The only place I managed to track one down was on the QVC website but they wouldn't deliver to where we live. Guess what I'll be getting for my birthday (it won't be the first iron I have had as a present from OH but the other one was not appreciated very much (to put it mildly), this one will be). Thanks.

I have a tank/steam iron, wouldn,t have anything else- cuts the ironing down by half- time is more precious than the inital outlay of the iron, Not a bad price really- I paid £200 for my first one- they came out about 11 yerars ago.

God I sound like my mother

Linda

I used to do my ironing; now OH is at home all day she indulges me as far as doing my dress shirts, but she refuses to do hankies. I sometimes do but mostly just shove them into the dresser drawer straight from the dryer. My mum taught me years ago the difference between how you should iron/fold men's and women's hankies... something about men's you fold over the same way twice and then the other way twice, and women's you fold into a small square and then a smaller square? Or is that entirely my imagination?

The word "system" probably adds $50...

And no offence, gloveman, but given the choice, I'd wear wrinkled clothes and take the gold :D

I earned £10 a hour in the uk, and had to turn customers away. I know there is a definite cat of people who totally hate ironing- and I help them- but realise that less clothes "need" ironing nowadays. But thanksfor that feedback- loved it.
Will concentrate on curtains and alterations too.....

Coming to calgary in June,

Sue:::)

June, nice! where do you plan on living...i would pay for ironing if the price is right! have been actually lookng for someone for the longest time and cant find anyone. A cleaner would charge me $25 per hour and with most Canadians not ironing, im guessing in that hour i wouldnt have that much ironed.

I priced out the drycleaners too and they want $3 per item to iron....i used to send 20 items for 20 quid in scotland andmy guy picked them up and brought them back to me.

Most people out here use their dryer for everything so most things dont need ironed, i still hang dry my clothes though, so i iron EVERYTHING, and people think im mad!

As for curtains, its all coming out here, you'll find in lots of show homes there are curtains up. I personally dont have any in my house as i havent found any that match up with my colour schemes (yet). My MIL was going to make some and send them over but thats taking it a little far :eek:

Good luck and let me know if you get set up....i think its a good market for expats!

Mine only cost me 50 pounds and it was wonderful. Thanks to Steve_P at least you will know where to get one here. As for the trouser press - I've checked Sears and they don't sell them (not yet anyway) but found another site where a Corby electric pant press is going for $490 plus the beloved taxes so that is one less thing for you to worry about!
