do obnoxious posters discourage you from posting?

this is a public poll

in order to ensure this poll does not turn out to be dull I have decided to make the results public

I noticed on another thread where someone wrote he was put off by some posters and rarely posted

I find this to be sad

what say you?

Is this a scientific poll...or can the regulars cock it up by voting that obnoxious posters discourage them?

Certainly not scientific

I am appealing to posters being honest and forthright if that is not asking too much?

The more obnoxious the more entertaining.

What about a poll to decide whether or not passive/aggressive threads about other threads are worth posting in. I'd vote yes as they can be quite funny.

Re: do obnoxious posters discourage you from posting?

I quite like posters who come on for all sorts of reasons (travelling parrots, adoration for an immigration advisor etc) and then get the pip because nobody agrees with them, but I get a bit cross when posters come on to deliberately get up everybody else's nose. It isn't necessesary and there are quite enough everyday boring irritations in the world already.

I wouldn't say so, it's the internet and this happens.

Besides, the amount of helpful and useful comments here far outweighs the arsey ones :D

Now that one I could vote for. If someone is reaally obnoxious, then they go on ignore, and the originator of this poll is very close to achieving that goal.

What or where is 'ignore'. I keep seeing references to it...does it exist? I'm pretty good at it all by myself, but if there is an unknown/unused icon function, how do I find it?

In your profile, on the left hand side under 'miscellaneous' there is an 'buddy/ignore lists' section. You can add people you want to keep on ignore there.

:)

go to 'my profile'

go to misc

open up buddy/ignore lists

put in the offenders name

and voila

Re: do obnoxious posters discourage you from posting?

There are a few posters that I guess some people find obnoxious . they don't tend to bother me too much .. I know there are people who are deliberately provocative and that's OK. Its the people who are very obviously full of crap that I have a problem with .I hate liars

BE tends to go in cycles for me. I post for a while and then the assholes get to be too much so I go away for a while .then I miss it or get bored and come back

At the moment I'm veering towards the disappearing for a while.

Another good poll Mike. I seem to recall it was only a few months ago that you didn't know how to do the polls, so I think you are coming along well.

The one irony here (given the needless kerfuffle about public/private) on the 2013 poll is that the "public notifier" was in Post 1, which some of us don't read until we have posted. (I just read the poll question and vote.)

Quite surprised with the results. Not sure why anyone would take an Internet forum so personally as to not post. I rather like one of the advice points on Mumsnet (a big UK forum) that "you can be the worst enemies on one thread, and perfect friends on another." I think that captures the right ethos.

I know how the 'ignore' works (only used once) but how does the 'buddy' function work? What does it do?

That's if you think the voters voted, er, truthfully. Or maybe they were being sarcastic? ;)

I have been on it - I wouldn't say I go on it regularly! Some good parenting info if you avoid the AIBU whirlwind. :D

It didn't occur to me that people would poll sarcastically.

Most definitely yes! Surprisingly, some of those that voted yes are in my opinion the worst offenders. Perhaps they do not see themselves as the problem?

The 'Penis Beaker' on Mumsnet, and also a thread on here, was one of the 'funniest moments of 2013' according to Ch4 in the UK.

Yes I did have problems at first but have since learned though trial and error, particularly this business of some here being scandalized that a poll I started wasn't labeled 'public poll'. I have since mended my wicked ways.

Funny thing is that people do not seem to realize this is an internet site. Any one of us could be conversing with Gawd only knows who. All I know is that posters here are not robots but are real humans, but that is about the extent of it. Anyone can take on a persona and since we do not post addresses or phone numbers there is little one can do to check the other person out. There is always the possibility of private contacts, via BE, but who knows what result that would bring.

I too am surprised at the results of this poll and if they are genuine, and that is a big IF, then there are a lot of nervous Nellies about .

Obnoxious you can usually deal with .. Personal attacks .. On forum and by pm are not necessary and sometimes it's hard bit to stoop to their level!

Yes,not in particular obnoxious people, but when I replied to someone whose dog had died,, many people castigated me for my apparent lack of sensitivity when I suggested that it was like having a child die which friends had told me was so for them.

Re: do obnoxious posters discourage you from posting?

Is this Internet Forum so very different from life? Some people are regular visitors, and you get to know their quirks, and remember a few of their sadnesses and triumphs, with others they pop in more infrequently and a few you just meet at times of crisis, and others visit once or twice like political canvassers.

Largo, when Tangram's dog died, the comments that you got were from parents with quite young kids, and none of us knew about the sadness of your daughter....that being said, you would probably still have received the same remarks...I have childless friends up the road, who dress their Westie in baby clothes, it's 15 and they count it's every breath...I do not for one moment consider their feelings for their beloved pet to be anything akin to the love of a parent...grief and loss at it's final demise, in spades... but not that of a parent.

Alan, thank heaven we have you to remind us that it's an Internet Forum! But it's 'generally' a nice one, where we noted and decried your absence Alan, when you took yourself off for a bit, and a spambot wouldn't have been happy at your return:thumbup:

I'm glad I know where the ignore function is now, but I won't use it, as I'm a big girl now, I'll just mutter dark imprecations at the ironing if anyone's nasty to me:unsure:

The problem I had with the ignore button is that you can still see that that person has posted, just not what they have posted - and if it's someone you find obnoxious enough to ignore its quite likely their posts would be provocative to others. :sneaky:
So I ended up taking the few people I ever put on ignore right off again just to see what all the fuss everyone was talking about! ;)
