Do I tip anyone at Christmas?

Just so I don't get caught out without cash and look like a pillock, will anyone call for a tip at Christmas? Before I've had the Fire Service, the Postman and the refuse department....does this happen in Canada? I particularly like the rubbish man, lovely chap, as opposed to the surly Québécois post lady....but do I tip 'em please?

If you get a newspaper delivered daily some people leave an envelope...if you get door to door mail delivery some people will give that person a card or a voucher etc...never heard of tipping the fire service or bin men.

If people you receive services from can damage you, tip them accordingly to the amount of damage they could inflict.

Unless they've already inflicted damage.

Re: Do I tip anyone at Christmas?

I don't tip anyone at Christmas and never have. So far there have been no incidents.

BTW, the Fire Department here is voluntary and also come out for 911 calls for ambulance they often get to the scene before the ambulance so do a bit of immobilising, CPR etc. At Christmas they collect for their "Disaster Fund" which helps people whose homes have been fire damaged. They also put on the best Canada Day fireworks show. So maybe this lot deserves a Christmas gift.

Why not just tip those you wish to tip?

I guess in my job then I could expect at least a dollar then
In my job I dont expect tips nor other forms of gratuities plus we also have a policy that states we cant receive such unless it is of minor value as per this

Values and Ethics Code for the Public Service.

Acceptance of gifts, hospitality and other benefits is permissible if they:
•are infrequent and of minimal value such as low-cost promotional objects, simple meals or souvenirs with no cash value;
•arise out of activities or events related to official duties of the public servant concerned;
•are within the normal standards of courtesy, hospitality or protocol; and
•do not compromise or appear to compromise your integrity or that of the CBSA in any way

I am paid to do my job and there have been days where I go above and beyond these duties.
Sure Im not making minimum wage but Im not also making a shed load of money either.
I could argue why should people be tipped if they provide a service and they are being paid to provide a service but thats not the point. If these people rely on tips to supplement their wage I could argue then they should have done better at school or look for a higher paying job or trained to get the qualifications for these higher paying jobs  but again thats not the point.
I tip people whom I deem deserve it and have provided excellent service that IMO deserves a tip or other reward.

Surely, a Christmas tip is gratuitous one. I don't believe that anyone relies upon such tips to supplement their "employment income"

No they probably dont unless thats the only time they are working. Probably in your line of work you might be bunged a nice bottle of scotch or meal for providing services to a client over the year as gratitude and I have no problems with that. Its the whole tipping culture that confuses some be it during xmas time or any other time of the year.
There have been several threads on tipping and who should be or should not be tipped.
I agree with you in tip who you think deserves to be tipped but not because its expected or customary.

Not likely. I bill each client each month; that is the only recompense I receive from clients. I have received gifts from people that I provided services to on an ex gratia basis but, generally, I regift those to members of my staff.

There might be some who would consider you a cheap bastard for regifting or perhaps passing yourself off as a lawyer who has ethics

My staff know where they came from. Regifting was the wrong term; people hand them to me and I then immediately hand them to others. Being cheap would be keeping them for myself:p

We usually get quite a few "gifts" from clients and most managers open them in the lunch room and let everyone enjoy them - that includes the booze. There are always a few cheap bastards that keep them for themselves but to each their own.

I'm talking about people you interact with frequently not some dopey **** you'll only have contact with once. For instance, if you eat at a local restaurant a lot then tip well or they'll spit in your food. If its some place you'll never go back to, give them 10% and **** them. Same with things like barbers, postmen, bin-men, local garage etc.

Bank Branch managers back in the UK used to do a similar thing with some of the booze received from company customers to the staff at Christmas. Seems a normal thing to do when you have an excess - obviously they kept some choice ones to themselves but fair play.

Ah but this dopey **** has the power to inflict some degree of damage that I was referring to
See that guy over there who has just tied up his boat and was fishing on the US side maybe we should go over and check him out. We could search his boat from stem to stern which might take several hours, cut open all his fish to ensure there is nothing hidden in them. Does it look like he is having trouble bending over or walking? mmm perhaps he has something shoved up his rectum so maybe we should detain him and have him sent to the hospital for an examination

Sort of like travellers who complain about us because they are pissed off that we seized their goods or made them pay duties and taxes or examined their baggage?
Im sorry sir but with these criminal convictions you are inadmissible into Canada and you will not be admitted.
In the complaint letter to follow Im sure there will be a paragraph on how dare I call them a criminal and that they are a law abiding person.

Oh thank you so much for your responses. I do buy my kids teacher something, and have often given my garage mechanic a bottle of scotch, and the lady in the bank a box of something, but that's cos I wanted to. Evidently they don't come and bang on the door here and demand, with an official receipt book in hand, which we had before. It's all those things that catch you out, when you just don't know what the drill is.

One year we had a card from the paper deliverererererer but I include a tip monthly instead, so the right person gets it instead of someone different who might help out at xmas.

I think I belong to the if you dont listen to my legal explanation as to why I am doing what I am doing then I will carry on doing my legal duty to do what it is that I need to do. Berate me, insult me, swear at me as much as you want just dont threaten me with violence though ( I dont mean the idle threat or statement I mean the actual swinging a fist or foot) as I have access to a steel baton and OC spray and I might be even stood next to a police officer who is carrying a taser and a glock pistol.
If you want to act like an asshole in front of your wife and kids or your gang buddies then go ahead. Im getting paid while I deal with you are you?

oh catch yourself on, you're just so butch and powerful.

Lets see, I and my colleagues get sworn at, insulted, berated, threatened with violence, actual swinging of fists. We have no access to steel batons or OC spray- whatever that is. I am usually alone, the nearest people are not within earshot. There is a button on the wall I can press though.

We generally don't feel the need to take this out on patients, not even the aggressive ones.

And you dont think we are held to the same standards:confused:
You might want to read up on section 25 of the Criminal Code. Its not about being butch or powerful its about protecting myself or others in the execution of my duties. If you honestly believe that throwing a punch at a Law Enforcement Officer will possibly not result in the assailant being subdued by any means necessary then you need to give your head a shake.
I suppose none of your patients who have shown violent behaviour or tendencies have never been sedated or restrained.
I can count one one hand not using any fingers or a thumb over the last 9 years since we were issued our tools how many times I have used a baton or OC spray. Heres a hint it will be the same figure as my bonus this year.
Sometimes the Im sorry sir you seem to be rather upset and adgitated would you like to sit down and take a breath doesnt always work.
