I thought it would be reasonable to let others know that we have not had good service or attitude from petsaway.uk. Others on the site recommended them , so we decided to go to them to sort the pooch out for our hopefully immenent departure to canada. We know how much moving animals stresses everyone. Now, this is only OUR experience and maybe the gentleman on the other side was having a bad day or 2 . We gave the sizes of our very little dog ( jack russel waying 6kg) . We were told to go up a size of airline approved crate - no reason given as to why. Then the crate didnt arrive in the 3 day window given. ( OH stayed home for this ) When we phoned it was met with ' what do you expect me to do about it on a friday' . Anyway there was more to it which I wont bore you with, but eventually crate arrived. It is HUGE!! for a german sheppard! We have kept all their emails ( and ours with the measurements ) so will try and get the crate exchanged but after the previous unhelpfulness I expect it is unlikely. Were told it is all to do with the suppliers and not them. So there is my rant and I feel better. So just a word of warning. If you were in a hurry and had your crate delivered to the airport for departure on that day - you would have been crateless and if it did arrive it would be wrong!

Why is it any safer for them in the hold? I would have thought that there is little risk for any dog in a crate in a hold, or much less risk that the dog being trodden on by a passenger walking through the aisles.

Is the air in the hold different to that in the cabin then? Are they not both pressurized?

I am fully aware that you only hear the horror stories. We are going to do lots of research into Swiss Air and if there is enough detail in how animals are kept and they have a good history then it maybe better for the two to be in a large crate together. Dogs are suppose to stay in their crates in the cabin and are not allowed to run about. My vet said she is asked at what temp she will say a dog can fly at something she refuses to do. She says they should heat the hold as you do the cabin for humans. |

I will try to find the doc that shows how many dogs have died in the hold. A friends dog was traveling back to Switzerland and there was no heating in the hold and the dog got Phenomena. Another was left for hours in the hold and died from dehydration.

How the heck do you get a dog crate in the cabin? You have to get a crate that fits under the seat in front |

I know that my friends dog slept on her lap (under a blanket) all the way back from LA to France.

LA to Paris is more than ten hours in the air, suppose twelve on the plane if all goes smoothly. That's a long time for dog or human bladder especially with cocktails and turbulence and pressurisation. I should not want to be sitting next to either of them.

I don't think they should let the dog drink cocktails on the flight.
The BMW picture above, btw, looks like what would happen to Charlie were the poster driving with him in the car. |
