I thought it would be reasonable to let others know that we have not had good service or attitude from petsaway.uk. Others on the site recommended them , so we decided to go to them to sort the pooch out for our hopefully immenent departure to canada. We know how much moving animals stresses everyone. Now, this is only OUR experience and maybe the gentleman on the other side was having a bad day or 2 . We gave the sizes of our very little dog ( jack russel waying 6kg) . We were told to go up a size of airline approved crate - no reason given as to why. Then the crate didnt arrive in the 3 day window given. ( OH stayed home for this ) When we phoned it was met with ' what do you expect me to do about it on a friday' . Anyway there was more to it which I wont bore you with, but eventually crate arrived. It is HUGE!! for a german sheppard! We have kept all their emails ( and ours with the measurements ) so will try and get the crate exchanged but after the previous unhelpfulness I expect it is unlikely. Were told it is all to do with the suppliers and not them. So there is my rant and I feel better. So just a word of warning. If you were in a hurry and had your crate delivered to the airport for departure on that day - you would have been crateless and if it did arrive it would be wrong!

I worried about shipping our cats out more than anything else when we moved over.

We used petsaway, as like you they were recommended on here, and they were great. So you must be really disappointed with the service you got.

Funnily enough they built our cats crate so they could go in together and it saved us money. We met them at the airport and popped the cats in, so we would of been stuck if the crate was wrong.

Wonder why you have ended up with a huge crate, surely this will add to the cost?

Did you deal with Dave? We did and he seemed ok. I hope they come through for you, and sort it out.

dont worry bout ranting i'd be ranting too!
i cant remember the name of the co i used to get my dogs to crete, but we have 2 boxers an they did try an persuade us to go for the bigger plastic crates but i opted to get them made to size for the dogs when we met them at airport they were spot on .... but why give yu such a big box tho???? sounds like they dont know there jack russels from there bull mastifs!

i hope yur going to complain bout the guys attitude to yu an i would kick off bout getting the box exchanged if yu have time cos i know yu'd have paid extra for it!
to us dog lovers who are willing to take our companions anywhere we move to even across seas we want the best care as precious to us and like julieanddave said we worry more bout getting them over than anything else - yu shouldn't have to deal with that sort of attitude bad day on there part or not!

keep us up to date on what yu do cos i'm in the process of job hunting in canada an hopefully be out there soon ... an i will be taking my "babies" with me :wub: so be interested how it goes an good luck.

I am most certainly going to try my best to sort this, as the box cost loads! £90 to be exact. I thought maybe it was normal to get such a huge box until I spoke to a friend who said she had used one this size for her poodle WITH puppies! It was Dave my OH spoke to. I think that relationship may have broken down!! Will have to do the sorting out myself (-: We are so stressed about taking the pooch which is why we wanted to get the crate early. Esp to get him used to it so long. Will keep you posted on the outcome.

well good luck, an if its any consallation my girls are birth sisters never been apart until they were crated but they were absolutely fine on the flight over, they were really well looked after ... given water an checked regularly, and they were absolutely fine when they got to the other end ... mind yu it was only a 4 hour flight - when we go from here to canada they got a 17 hour flight - now that one i will be going out of my head worrying bout them an chewing on the nicotine patches!!!!!

Good to have all information possible on people's experiences when moving their pets.

We have an 18 month old Boston Terrier and a 5 year old Patterdale Terrier and think it will be best for them if we sail as the Boston would not cope with the flight. This will be done if time allows f not we really are going to have to look into flying them very carefully.

Update: According to Dave their supplier sent the wrong pet crate. Large instead of intermediate size . Reason for not having medium as size guides suggest : their experience is the one size up is better. I will take their word on this until the crate arrives as they are the experts. Wouldnt let us cancel and return the box but promised the correct one will be with us tomorrow. Another day for OH to stay at home. The comment was 'when things go wrong , it all goes wrong'. I appreciate that these things do happen sometimes. Of interest for you guys still arranging things - the crate we have paid £90 for you can buy for £69 online incl P+P. :frown:

i dont get it - wouldnt let yu cancel an return the crate?? .... yu havnt got to pay for the 2nd box being delivered surely even if they'd made it ... their mistake!!!! they could easily pick the huge one up when they drop the new one off then yu jus pay the difference!

i did look at the ones online but thought knowing me i'll get something wrong thats why i jus went with the co's box

Not paying any extra money and no charge for the new delivery/pick up. But still seems quite a difference in price from online shops. Guess I am paying for their expertise.

oh thats ok then! as i said i know using a co was a huge weight of my mind - sometimes wish i had a titchy tiny thing that i could jus stick in my handbag an take on the plane! - some of the prices that i've seen quoted are ridiculous!
but we are from a nation of dog lovers so will pay the price - gonna do some more digging for info but looks like i've got to take mine on a flight to athens then onto to canada when we go - or back to uk first then onto canada!
.... what a palava!!! but they are soooo worth it!

Good luck with your trips! I am only looking into direct flights as dont think we are going to cope with the stress of the dog in the cargo hold! He will probably be ok but like I said not sure about us. Pity you have to have extra stretch from Athens too. If I could I would have put him in my bag on the plane too. :sneaky:
But whatever the cost or the hassle there is no way the pooch is staying behind!!

How much did petsaway charge for the cats? we are thinking of just one cat but they havent got back to us wth prices!! from uk to ottawa

Not seen those will have a look.

Just for your information Swiss Air will fly very small dogs in the cabin to US. Some people we just met flew their Boston back to France in the cabin..

The problem is you have to fly to France as the UK will not allow them to enter unless they are in Cargo :(

When did they start this practice of allowing dogs and cats into the cabin?

Don't get me wrong, I love dogs, but they have no place in a cabin of an airplane, regardless of their size.

I've been on flights where a dog cries constantly (an understandable reaction to flying!) and it was worse than a baby (at least a baby could be held, fed, etc).

I also work with someone who is SEVERELY allergic to dogs, cats, etc. (she carries an epipen). They don't notify you when someone on-board has a pet with them, meaning she now puts herself at risk every time she flies.

My parents shipped our dog over when we moved to England (the joys of quarantine - THAT was heartbreaking!), and then they shipped two more when they moved to the US. The dogs were perfectly comfortable in the hold, and were very well looked after.

Personally I would rather hear a bit of a whine from a dog than a screaming baby.

They do say the dogs must be quite (non yappy dogs).

One of my dogs is a Boston and not recommended to fly in the hold due to breathing problems.

Most US internal flights allow small dogs in the cabin and some international.

A log has shown just how unsafe is is for dogs in the hold not something I would want to risk.
