Definition of Ironic please
#1
Am up visiting sis in law and we were just hanging out today and that Alnis Morrisette song came on "Ironic".
I'm trying to be all clever and explain how the woman needs to learn the definition of ironic, and sis in law says "No, that is irony shes talking about"
So we have this big heated debate where i'm trying to give examples of irony, and she's having none of it.
In my mind irony is "moving to Canada to get away from immigrants" or some such other innocently hypocritical statement which I have for ever believed to be true.
In my haste to be proven right I looked online and the definition there was "and event which has an outcome other than what was expected"
Which makes Ms Morrisette correct and all the naysayers that complain about her ignorance look a bit daft.
What the bloody hell is the right definition of Irony

That first entry in Wiki made my head hurt, but the second one kind of explained it better! (simple in my terms!).
Google I suppose is your friend but I wanted to know what other interpreted the meaning as too.

If the money the state placed in my grade 10 English class was well spent, the classic example of irony in literature is O. Henry's Gift of The Magi, or something. He sells his watch to buy her combs while she sells her hair to buy a fob for his watch. I'm sure there's happier irony out there but what do they care about students. Dr. Jack Kevorkian Dead at 83....... that's irony.
