I'm not judging your choice of curry but... you went all the way to Canada and you are craving a korma! I hope you find a good one! Sorry I can't be any help, I just came for the comments on this one :)

I must admit to being somewhat puzzled about the difficulty in finding a decent curry in ON, given the diversity of the population and large number of Indian & Pakistani immigrants, I mean, here in a much more monoculture Newfoundland, even we have many Indian restaurants - certainly compared to 17 years ago when I moved here when there was, errm, two in St Johns
.<Fred drifting> One such operation pivoted in the pandemic to making chiller meals that can be reheated at home. The local chain of convenience stores in turn has embraced this in the pandemic, stocking currys, pizza from Piatto (who you should check out as they have a location in Guelph now...https://www.piattopizzeria.com/guelph) and craft beer. Indeed, "We stock Curry Delight, Piatto Pizza & Craft Beer" is the advertising slogan de jour, enabling these convenience stores to pretty much meet all requirements for a happy life! </fred drift> Next time I'm in Guelph we'll have to try that pizza place...it is just steps from the Wooly a place DBD knows....who knows he and I may have been in there at the same time although I probably haven't been in since 2015. I must admit when I think of interesting and healthy cuisine NL doesn't spring to mind. |

Pataks is the only variety of pre-made paste (rather than sauce) I use (I make my curries from scratch normally).. they are quite good.
https://www.pataks.ca/products/korma-spice-paste - they also make a sauce: https://www.pataks.ca/products/korma-sauce and a 'meal kit' https://www.pataks.ca/products/korma-3-step-sauce-kit :)

Pataks and Sharwoods curry sauces are widely available in supermarkets here so I'd assume similar goes for ON.
I believe that if you now want good Indian food in Vancouver, you have to cross the Fraser and got to Surrey. There used to be a very thriving Punjabi Market area, in Vancouver with incredible stores and restaurants. There were at least 10 sari shops selling saris, but also silk material to die for, and extremely cheap! Unfortunately, a lot of the people and many of the shopkeepers moved out to Surrey as that city grew and there was a much larger South Asian population. Some young people who grew up in the Punjabi Market area with parents who ran stores are trying to revitalize the area, so hopefully there will be a few more restaurants in the region rather than having to drive something over 30 km to Surrey. |

Hey folks,
Anyone have any recommendations in the Hamilton/Burlington/Surrounding area for a sweet, bright yellow Korma? Cheers! Best curry we had was at The Prince of India at Fairview Street in Burlington. Haven't found anything decent in Hamilton. That was a couple of years ago though and you know how these places change hands/chefs quite often so it's a bit of a gamble. |

I used to go there quite often when we lived a block away, not so much lately though I was there with HGerchikov within living memory.

Kohinur Indian Cusine Apparently the best (and only) Indian restaurant in Binbrook.....It was meh, other people in our group found it spicy but they have a low tolerance for that. |

I must admit when I think of interesting and healthy cuisine NL doesn't spring to mind. When I moved to Nfld 17 years ago, eating out options were rather more limited than today, it's true. Back then, there were a few decent resto's in ST John's (but only two curry houses) and outside of St John's it was basically fish and chips or burgers. There has been quite the explosion in choice since then both in St John's and elsewhere. You can still get lots of deep fried stuff but I can take you to a restaurant at Grates Cove (at the end of nowhere) where you can have the best cajun/newfoundland fusion cuisine ever (of all the ways to eat cod, that staple here, their Cod etouffee is the best), a St John's restaurant that was in Canada's top ten for several years, various small ethnic restaurants from Indian, to Pakistani, Afghan & Fillipino, a Garden centre with a restaurant specialising in locavore produce to name but a few. And thats before we get started on the craft breweries! |
