Decent Korma in Southern Ontario?
 

Hey folks,

I moved over here in February 2020, just before the world turned upside down. Haven't had too much home sickness yet (home sickness for normality definitely - wfh is getting old fast), but lately I've been craving some foods from home. Burlington/Hamilton area where I live isn't exactly short of british stores so most things I crave, I can find. The one thing I've not been able to find is a good place that does Korma that I like (I know, most people judge me for liking it!). All of the ones I can find here are a lot more tomatoey and spicey than what I could find back in Glasgow. It's even a different colour - not the usual yellow-ish baby nappy kinda colour I was used to. I was wondering if maybe they call it something different here?

Anyone have any recommendations in the Hamilton/Burlington/Surrounding area for a sweet, bright yellow Korma? :rofl:

My dog is called Ruby because she's the colour of a chicken korma. She's not bright yellow though, if you want that I'd suggest a restaurant offering "Chinese Canadian" food.

If you want a korma that looks like a korma in London or Belfast then the Coriander Kitchen in Orangeville is the place.

Edited to add, I haven't had the korma, but the Dhansak is really good at Gateway of India .. similar to a pathia in the UK.. and I've found all the food at India village / Shenhai to be good (pre covid).

VH sauces , I tried one oncecandbit was so vile I've not tried any others . It was a Chinese type one, maybe sweet and sour.

Pataks is the only variety of pre-made paste (rather than sauce) I use (I make my curries from scratch normally).. they are quite good.

I use VH Plum Sauce, usually only with roast ham as it goes well with that. Not tried it with any satays or anything else.

the VH medium garlic marinade is pretty good. It could be the marinade vs sauce thing as to why, but it's good for a stir-fry

Pataks and Sharwoods curry sauces are widely available in supermarkets here so I'd assume similar goes for ON.

Jamie Olivers Korma recipe from his good food revolution book (essentially the 2010's version of Delia's treatise on cooking from the 70's/80's simplified a bit) is pretty good and straightforward to make: Jamie Oliver's Chicken Korma

Yes, they're easily available here but so are people from India operating restaurants in various Indian or Anglo-Indian styles.

I must admit to being somewhat puzzled about the difficulty in finding a decent curry in ON, given the diversity of the population and large number of Indian & Pakistani immigrants, I mean, here in a much more monoculture Newfoundland, even we have many Indian restaurants - certainly compared to 17 years ago when I moved here when there was, errm, two in St Johns

The local chain of convenience stores in turn has embraced this in the pandemic, stocking currys, pizza from Piatto (who you should check out as they have a location in Guelph now...https://www.piattopizzeria.com/guelph) and craft beer. Indeed, "We stock Curry Delight, Piatto Pizza & Craft Beer" is the advertising slogan de jour, enabling these convenience stores to pretty much meet all requirements for a happy life! </fred drift>

It depends a bit on the specific location. I work with a guy who was obliged to move from Brampton to Vaughn. He's Indian. "There's nothing to eat in Vaughn" he advised. Brampton, of course, has as many Indian restaurants as anyone could want. Keralan cuisine, Punjabi cuisine, Bengali cuisine, on and on, probably a bit short on iridescent yellow korma. Vaughn is historically Italian so, no, it wouldn't be the first place to look for a curry.

Generally though, you're right, there's no end of curry houses.

Will look for Piatto when next in Guelph but, I guess, it's been a year since I've been there, so don't hold your breath.
