Dash Cams

I decided I just had to get a dash cam to show the world just how bad Canadian drivers are, lol.

Found a basic little cam on Ebay for about 70 bucks delivered. Seems to work fine.

But wouldn't you know it, as soon as I hit record, they all start behaving themselves! lol.

Roundabouts are may favourite. I'll have a youtube channel up and running soon.

Anyone else captured any gems?

Let us know your YT channel. Hope there is some commentary !

Dash cams are cool, but don't think I'll get one, as the last thing I need is more technology aggro.

We bought a dash cam ready for our trip to Ontario last year but it didn't arrive in time. In fact it was so late in arriving we got a full refund.

Lots of cyclists with helmet cams these days.

Tonnes of them!

It's sad, really, though. So many seniors showing why they just shouldn't be on the road. Volunteer firefighters who usually operate battered vehicles, with no brake lights, and never indicate. Cops who speed to Tim's.

You will capture a lot of stuff but don't dwell on the negatives too much! I prefer the animal footage and that's what I tend to share, rather than shaming people that really should know better.

I'll definitely share if I catch someone being a complete d-bag, though :sneaky:

I actually witnessed some car park carnage today, but didn't get it on the dash cam. I'm new to this paparazzi thing.

Re: Dash Cams

Actually considering getting one. They're at the stage now where you can spend well under $100 and get a fairly high quality image even at night.

Was looking at this
on Amazon the other day. It's $70 in the US and you'll probably need to spend another $20 odd on a larger size memory card. I'd do it simply because you see some comedy on the roads and it's always good if some ass hat decides to side swipe you or such like.

Hi Dave, 95% of my driving is in the dark, have you tried it at night, if so what is the quality like ?
That's a real clear picture, especially for the price. Thanks.

There's a dash cam thread on red flag forums - automotive sub-section, showing videos of some of the worst drivers out there.

It's supposed to have IR night vision, but we had a spell of ice rain last night, so I decided not to tempt fate. I've only had my truck 4 weeks, the last one got written off in five, lol

Hey Dave, I bought a dash cam like yours, what size micro card do you use ?
More interested in what class card, I have 8/16 & 32GB but they're all class 10, now I am reading some dash cams will only handle class 4 to 6.
Thanks.

I thought about getting one as my drive can be interesting at times.

Just not sure legal wise how the video could be used against you in the event of an accident, not that I plan to be in an accident, but can the video be used against you in the event your in one? I assume it can be, but not sure.

If you're to blame for an accident, rip it out and throw it in the ditch quicksmart:D

I bought one from the same person. Works great, however even though I've turned off the 10 min loop feature, it still loops after 10 mins.

I got a 32 gig card from Staples. It has a "10" on the card. It's a Kingston. It records for about two hours in total. I have it set to ten minute loops, or whatever it's called.

What size of card do you have? Is it possible that it's running out of space and starting again?

That's ok then, yes class 10. Thanks.

Mr Bean, what Dave says, if you're only using a low GB card or low class card it will loop again in no time.

It's a 32gb. Got it from Tiger Direct yesterday. It isn't running out of space but just looping every 10mins. I'll drop them a line today to see what they say.

Dear customer,
Hello, there,

Sorry there haven't a way to record it as one files,
This is built-in Intelligent Storage method which can't be adjusted.

Also there haven't this kind of camcorder in the marketing.
Hope you can understand.
Nice day!
Lydia

That's the reply I got. No big deal as I can stitch the .avi files together if I want to. Disappointing but not the end of the world.

Mr Bean, I'm glad you can decipher that email, looks like it's written in code to me.
What is it saying exactly ? I'm not very tech savvy.
What does stitching the avi files together mean ?
Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Mr Bean Mar 9th 2015 1:47 am

Re: Dash Cams

No questions are stupid.

I kind of understand the email as I deal with a lot of Asians at work LOL. She is basically saying that the device will not record any content after the 10 min roll. Kind of seems pointless to me to have the ability to turn the feature off mind you. As far as joining the files together to make one movie, there are lots of program out there to do this. You just have to make sure the audio codecs match up on all files you want to join.

On their site on Ebay, if you scroll down to near the bottom, they have a graph there and it tells you how long a 1/2/4/8GB card will record for in the various pixel stages and how many still photo's you can take etc.
ie. 1GB 10mins recording, 2GB=20min, 4GB=40min & 8GB=80min, so if it will only record 10mins on a loop, I don't see the point of the graph.
Mis-representation ?
If I knew this, I wouldn't have bought this model.

Isn't the point that it records a 10 minute file and then records another, and deletes the oldest one when it runs out of space?

That's how most of them operate, and most people consider it a feature, as they don't want to have to edit videos, just copy off the file with the bits they're looking for.

So what you're saying is, if the loop function is OFF, it records for 10 mins, stops, records for 10 mins stops, etc until it runs out of space on the card then then re-writes over the beginning of the card again, and does that until you download it ?
And if the loop function is ON, it records for 10 minutes then loops back over that first 10 mins continually ?
If this is the case, I have no problem with that, I mis-understood what Mr Bean said.
The last dash cam I had, which was an expensive one would, when the loop feature was turned OFF, continuously record until my ignition was turned off and when reaching the end of the card would over write from the start again and each file was the length of that particular journey.

Yes that's how it works.

This is how I wanted it to work. I wanted to have the choice to do both.
