The dark side of layoffs and bad economy

Re: The dark side of layoffs and bad economy
I saw a story on manufacturing about a candy company who was having financial issues, and bought by a private investment first, who closed the plant down for 1 year, modernized it and then opened it again and its profitable again, granted they went from 400 some employees to 12 employees which likely helps profits.
But, aside from some specialised and complex devices like modern electronic chips, most manufacturing will be local in twenty years. We won't be sending thousands of people to factories every day to build cars, we'll send a print job to the local 3D printing store, and drive it away when it's done.

Yes. I've read of a number of US companies bringing manufacturing back from China, but they're bringing it back to factories which have almost no staff. I'm not exactly sure what magic wand Harper was supposed to wave to prevent companies from either moving their low-skilled work to China, or replacing the workers with machines. Build a new Iron Curtain, I guess, ban robots, and declare himself Great Leader For Life.

However the vast majority is still made in China though...

The Tesla's anyhow seem to have decent power, the few I have seen seem to fly up the road just as well as the gas powered cars, granted they don't have the same range though and have to take a pit stop to charge making their drive longer....

A numskull near us has one, and it takes off like a scalded cat at traffic lights, but the idiot driving it won't do more than 25mph on an interstate cloverleaf on-ramp that I can take at 45mph in my dämn truck!

Canadian dollar on track for 2nd-worst year ever - Business - CBC News
Increase in exports because of the low Loonie apparently has not materialized, but should at some point....
Merchandise trade to the US is down when compared to last year.
"So far this year, a boom in exports has failed to materialize. Merchandise trade exports to the U.S. are actually down from a year ago. That, too, is helping to keep the Canadian dollar low. But market watchers say exports should eventually turn higher."
