No, I couldn’t bear that, although I do speak to a lot of people who are incarcerated, and have been frequently, and the experience certainly doesn’t seem to put them off. Traditionally a number of people in Atlantic Canada do ‘arrange’ to spend parts of the winter months in prison to avoid the worst bits of winter and be fed...bloody sad, but I’m told it’s true.

The C19 experience really has been an eye opener. I really love, adore and get on with my husband and son, but there have been a couple of times when we are all getting edgy with each other and have gone off to do things in other parts of the house so we don’t end up like a sack of spitting cats :blink:

I’ve imagined what it might be like to then be doing C19 with a volatile person with a short fuse, who you don’t love or trust and the thought is beyond me.

Stepson went round to Shoppers Drug mart this morning - prescription pick up and eggs and butter. They have a limit of six people in store to shop.

There is a family of four ahead of him waiting to get in. That's a family of four, not one person per shopping visit.

Three individuals leave the store and father gets into an argument with the security person because he won't let them in yet as that would put them over the limit. Father gets into such a strop he says they'll go to the other store - it's not that far but doesn't have the wide range of stuff. They get into a car and drive off.

The dog needed to go to the vet today, and of course they are not letting people go in with their pets except in extreme situations (like putting a pet down) and they even do a COVID pet screening over the phone before coming outside to get the pet. We were asked if the dog has been lethargic, had a fever, loss of appetite or if she has been sneezing and coughing.

The vet has a pretty good method set up, arrive and call, they check you in, then call you when its your turn, you take the pet and attach the pets leash to a hook by the door, then stand back at least 6 feet, someone opens the door and takes the pet in, then the doctor calls and talks through everything on the phone, someone brings pet back out, puts the leash on the hook. Payment is either email transfer or credit card which they must receive before bringing the pet back out.

Equine vets can only come out for "emergencies" and the definition of emergency is very tight. This evening I saw a mare with a new foal, born yesterday. The mare is bleeding internally but that's not enough to count as an emergency.

Regular vets here seem to be able to do most things still, but certainly not letting people into the office for majority of services, only the pet is allowed in.

my daughter has had to take her dog to,the emergency animal hospital a few times in the last few weeks due to heart failure. They have more or less the same procedures in place.

Thank goodness! and not a day too soon. Of course there will be doubters, and some who mock openly, but that's just human nature. Others may question the science itself.

2 1/2 years at a Young Offenders Institution where I was younger than some of the inmates. I intended to become a PEI but, when that went out of the window, I joined the Army.

Good call in my opinion. The only difference between the prison officer and the inmates is both are incarcerated but the prison officer gets to go home between tours of duty.....

Trump is making C19 a political event by accusing China of almost deliberately, if inadvertantly, causing the pandemic.
China will be one of those countries, and there will likely be few of them, with sufficient spare cash to help out.
My query is whether they'll do so or whether they'll make it difficult, the latter meaning that historically low interest rates charged for US bonds will need to rise sucking more out of the US economy than might have been the case earlier.

Yeah with my issues I couldn't handle that line of work, and my issues disqualify me from those kinds of jobs so not an option, same with military and a variety of other jobs, couldn't be a pilot either.

I've met some people who worked corrections long term, they were all a bit interesting, but I imagine its a rough work environment, probably why BC seems to have a fairly high turn over.

My 1st house in the UK was a 5 minute walk from Feltham YOI. Looked like an awful place from the outside, probably 100x worse on the inside.

Feltham was where the vast majority of our inmates were held until sent to the one where I worked (Huntercombe YOI. Google informs me that it is now a prison). I went on as much detached duty as I could, so worked in lots of places for short periods of time.

I had severe acne until I was about 24. I used to train with the inmates as much as possible and, through doing so, they learned that I competed at an international level in karate. Jean Claude Van Acne, was their name for me.

I enjoyed my time working as a Prison Officer and it taught me a huge amount about one's views are massively affected by one's environment.

That is certainly true, environment we are exposed to especially early in life, can really affect us, sometimes in good ways, sometimes in bad ways. It is also thought that some mental health disorders are in part caused by environment in which people were exposed to, genetics also plays a role, but for some the environment in which one was exposed to growing up plays a role.

Outbreak at first long term care home has been declared over, outbreak was discovered March 6. 76 residents at that care home ended up infected, with 20 deaths,

78 in hospital of which 21 are in ICU

BC plans to announce their plans in how restrictions will be lifted tomorrow.

I'm grateful that mine are not in a care home but isolating in their own place and are <touches wood> relatively fit an healthy. I've posted before about the reality, for the first time in 15 years of living in Canada, that I cannot hop on a plane and go see them if the need arises being one of the hardest things I have to deal with. I don't anticipate being able to see them until next year at the earliest. I said to my Mum the other day - 'Could you both try and stay alive for another year or two at least so I can see you again'.. Happy Wednesday everyone.

At my mother's age, and that she has a serious but fully "fixed" health issue (has a pacemaker) there is, as I noted as the international air travel system imploded in March, a very real chance that I may never see my mother again, even if she doesn't get coronavirus.

Can't say for other provinces, but in BC they have cancelled 15,000+ surgeries to free up space in the healthcare system.

That said BC Government has never brought in nearly as extreme restrictions other places have, and the response of the BC Gov't has been pretty rational when all things considered, some people dislike the fact our premier isn't always on TV talking, but he has chosen to allow Dr. Henry to do the daily briefings, she is after-all the expert in this and I actually think its a good decision to let her take the lead.

We are far worse off now because of everything going on, so its certainly complicated life more than I ever imagined it would thinking back to January when it was first being reported on in China. I figured it would be another SARS where most places wouldn't be affected, but man was that ever wrong.

Going forward the biggest hurdle for many including us will be finding ways to keep housing and not be sleeping on the streets, Canadian's in general have heavy debt loads, so this could turn very ugly, and considering the lack of summer jobs this year for university students, they will struggle more than usual as well.

Some of the highlights of BC plans to relax things.

British Columbia released its plans and expectations for relaxing restrictions today.

Small gatherings of 4-6 people will be permitted in time for the May long weekend.

Provincial parks expected to open May 14 for day use, camping possible in June.

Hotels, movie theaters and film industry possibly by summer.

Casinos, bars, and night clubs wont reopen anytime soon.

Aiming for school to start in September.

That seems an odd announcement, I picked up at Home Depot the weekend before last and garden centres have typically been open for pick up, with some allowing browsing as usual. Lots of other shops have a counter at the door and sell to the public without allowing people in. It seems like an announcement legalising what's already happened.

Garden Centres are in phase 1 of the release of the Nfld lockdown which happens next week all being well. It too is an odd announcement given that Home Depot et all are still operating - and more specialist garden centres have successfully pivoted to an order online/by phone and pick up kerbside model. (My local hydroponic guy - from whom we get fresh eggs - has never been busier by the way, what with the home growing weed business taking off.) Indeed, it rather feels like some of the Nfld lockdown easiing plan is a copy and paste from other provinces. Not unexpected I guess but the twitter commentariat has been swift to point this out. Last week there was a degree of hysteria around tourists, or allegedly tourists since no-one has actually seen/spoken to them coming from away (elsewhere in Canada or <the horror>America to look at the icebergs). That prompted the swift passage of new powers yesterday that essentially means that cops can arrest, detain and repatriate come from aways who come here for non-essential purposes. Those wonderful Newfoundland tourism commercials are all being shelved for the forseeable future...

Oh yes, and the Royal St John's Regatta (Rowing) has been cancelled for the first time since the start of WW2. That's the weird public holiday we have here that only goes ahead if the weather is good enough for the regatta to run.

I thought eggs would be a problem during the lock down, I usually sell a dozen most days at work and, if there's no work, there's no customers. Eggs however are in demand, the price of RTL chickens has skyrocketed and new customers have appeared. Someone, addicted to fresh eggs at work, actually drove out to buy three dozen. The issue is going to be that, if office life resumes, there'll be the egg customers there and the newly developed ones here and yet more chickens will be required.

We have just ordered 75 chicks, the vast majority of which are meat birds. We have never tried these before and the experiment is to see if the cost is worth the additional taste. We were amazed at the difference between ours and shop purchased eggs. It will be interesting to see if the same applies to meat.

I suspect not as we don't buy our meat from supermarkets but time will tell.
