Hi Voddy67

I haven't ventured far from where i live but i can name a few areas to start with, i am sure others maybe more specific regarding the 30 minutes from the Airport.

I have heard Fall River is lovely, Bedford & then going away from Halifax, Elmsdale, Enfield & Truro.

I hope this helps

IMO only & assuming you are not living in Halifax a family of 4 could get by on $3K take home, you may have to put your holiday plans on hold & hopefully you would of already purchased a vehicle, but with no other debts $3K a month is possible, unsure if this will be enough if you have a mortgage. But remember everyone lives differently so use this as just a guideline, i am sure others can advise you on this better than i as i am a stay at home mom for know!

Hi Joules

My situation is very different from most, i have been very ill for the last 2 years but have a recovery plan in place. Things have been hard but i/we don't regret moving for one moment.
We were aware that after immigrating to Canada we would have no support & we put some money aside in case things went wrong with my health, which they did.
I have a 5 year old & my eldest is 7in October, both are girls & very active. They are alot safer here in a small town in NS than in the UK, our pace of life is much slower, ideal with my health in mind, the medical support has been excellent & locals have been friendly.
If you are in good health & can look after your kids full time this will help, no childcare bills. Things might be tight to start with but believe me its worth it.
We have a lower standard of living but a much higher quality of life. I am unsure what kind of work you may seek in the future but here networking is key, also there is that " who you know rather than what you know" so don't worry you have plenty of time to make contacts through activities with the kids. If you were able to find a company you liked the sound of, try volunteering, this could easily lead to a job or at least a reference from a Canadian/local company, this reference will help in getting the attention of future employers especially if you are part of a small community.
I hope this helps.

Are you coming over for good? Have you been on a reccie to check out prices etc. I wouldn't take anyones advice on this forum you need to see for yourself.

Thanks for pointing out Fall River and Bedford are lovely, Novagirl, 99% of Brits can't be wrong.

I have visited Fall River in the summer and the fall and it was very pleasant. I personally prefer somewhere with an open aspect and Fall River is very heavily treed, but many people like that about it.

I found Bedford a bit "estate" like, but again, it is just personal preference and many others like it there.

Going out towards Enfield it gets a bit more rural (although communities closer to Halifax feel quite rural by UK standards) and property is likely to be cheaper.

You do need to come over for a recce though if you can. It is a bit harsh to say don't believe anyone, but don't build your life on others opinions. Mostly it is about personal preference and people can only give you their views, you obviously have to work out what is good for you.

If you have to move out without visiting first I would suggest renting as cheaply as possible at first anywhere commutable to work. This means that you waste as little cash as possible and you get the chance to have a good look around before making a comittment. Others renting on here will be able to advise you more. I will be moving out in August so if I can help in anyway feel free to get in touch.

Good luck with the recce.
