Default Commonwealth Games

Will it be ready? A bridge collapse doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

No.

Will they carry on regardless and put a brave face on the whole thing?

Almost certainly.

The British media just loves to have a go developing nations when they put on sporting events. They trotted out the same self satisfied fear mongering about the Athens Olympics and SA World Cup. That bridge could of collapsed anywhere.

We'll see how the 2012 Olympics are in London. Typical media bashing by the Tabloids in the UK, they gave Canada a right going over for the recent games in Vancouver.

I get the impression the problems run a lot deeper in india.

Its not that india is incapable of running a big show like this, but on this occasion it doesnt look good, based on reports coming from team liason officers and the like.

The bridge failure is just a focal point, there were already serious accomodation issues regardless of the bridge. Now there will be questions raised about construction standards in the other venues too, and no doubt further delays that the organisers can ill afford...

No they didn't really. Most of the media i saw was in a positive light. The Canadians are a little bit sensitive.

Eventually... but in the lead up and early days the UK media had a fairly negative view I seem to recall. Thats the UK media for you though innit.

Maybe you're right but i actually didn't see hardly any negative press in the UK. It was mainly quite positive during the build up and the actual games.

In fact, i do remember lots of press (written and TV) feeling sorry for them re the weather and hoping for the best.

The only way i found out about the bad press was on here and in the Canadian press.

I enjoyed the games anyway

The show will go on. it does seem like something of a half hearted effort by them though for a relatively minor competition.

I have read about collapses of new infrastructure in India before so the bridge collapse there is far from unique. It does look like athletes are starting to take the view that its not worth taking the risk attending so the danger is the whole thing could unravel.

It seems as though New Zealand, Canada and Scotland have been the first to raise concerns and now England. An Australian media stunt was to get bomb making material through security. ie not just a UK media invented fuss

Overall the UK media was very positive about the Vancouver olympics. They pointed out a few weak spots in the organisation especially at the start but they were very positive about the host city, people and "experience" overall.

Construction for the 2012 olympics seems to ticking along okay. The velodrome is weathertight and apparently due for completion early 2011.

Looks like the Canadians are the first to boycott the Commonwealth games, and give it a right bashing.
