Default COLD Weather Tips n Tricks

OK i screwed up.

I left the wipers on my car fully open on my windshield last night and this morning (After a flash freeze) they got stuck there.

I should have pulled them from the screen, stopping them from sticking. (Its mornings like this that i miss the underground parking lot at the old town house we had.)

We also forgot to put salt down on the drive and path. Instead we just watched the snow and said, oooowww its snowing, nice.

So any new tips on vehicle snow clearing, path cleaning, ice removing would be nice, before this white stuff gets out of hand. LOL.

Ive got the winter oil in the car, snow tires fitted, got -45 washer fluid in the wash bottle, snacks and a blanky in the trunk and snow boots at the ready.

Move to where it doesn't snow much?

I shovel/push snow before it stops - depending how much is expected.

If 20" is forecast I'll go out and clear the area I usually clear every few inches. Doing that a few times is far more manageable than one big one - unless using a snow blower.

The hardest part is avoiding temptation to redo the part you just did because of what's fallen while you were out there.

We could go to the extremes and do you have flares, cat litter for traction,
shovel, lock deicer, and of course a fully functioning block heater cord.

If you can get an extension cord out to a car with frozen locks, a few minutes with a blow dryer will get you in.

I'll lend you a pair if you can't find any. I don't need mine down here. It's +21C at the moment.

OK 72ish. Yes I miss the winter wonderland.......Not. !

I do have to cover up the tomato plants on my patio occasionally if the overnight temperature looks like it will get down to anywhere near 40 ish. What a chore !

If you're out there, cat litter or sand bags in the boot are handy for traction, folding shovel to clear the snow, in the boot.

Get a soft bristle broom to clear the snow off the car quickly without scratching it, sod using those tiny little car brushes.

Keep a box of matches and candles in the glove box...it's easy heat if you break down in the middle of no where and the battery is dead sort of thing. This is on top of having a blanket in the boot.

Don't use warm water from a kettle to clear ice off your windscreen...my old neighbour learned that the hard way....it was funny to the rest of us

If you know it's going to be freezing rain over night, wrap tarp of the windscreen and secure it through the doors as you can just peel it off in the morning and it's so much easier to deal with.

One thing I have been amazed with here in NS is the amount of new houses built with no garage at all......... this is my first winter here and one thing it has already taught me is that the house I buy/build will have a double attached and heated garage...............

If in Alberta make sure your BBQ is securely attached to your deck railings or it could end up blowing off in a Chinook wind, as almost happened to ours yesterday morning.

However leave it accessible for winter BBQs....10 degrees forecast here on Monday so we are planning on grilling

practice doing donuts in the local car park, so when you do eventually spin out through no fault of your own, you'll have a rough idea of how to control it.
