Christmas song question

When you have a Christmas party over here and have locals over, do you play all the good UK Christmas songs or do you put on crap ones that they know?

The reason I ask, is; I was having a somewhat impromptu Christmas party on Friday night and people moaned about the Slade, Wizard, Shakin’ Stevens etc. Christmas music, until I pointed out it was my beer, tequila, vodka and sausage rolls and if they didn't like it they could naff right off. They seemed to warm to the music after that revelation. I'm not so sure if we have another party where people aren't quite so dependent on our booze, if they’d like UK Christmas songs?

You shouldn't be giving them Sausage rolls and booze. You will never get rid rid of 'em. Probably turn up New years eve now:(

I put on some nice Christmas music, basically all the number ones from 1973 to Mr. Blobby and they were ambivalent at best. I suspect if I put on Randy Travis or Dwaight "I'm a **** Yokum they'd be all over it.

Probably not. Seems a pretty clear study to me. Your booze is infinitely preferable to UK Christmas songs. Anyway, not all Canadian Christmas songs are rubbish. Hallelujah was a Leonard Cohen song and that's pretty decent. Can't think of any others though ... ;)

Nope - our party is on the 20th, the same nght that some or other country music christmas celebration is on TV - as soon as the inlaws saw that advertised it was a foregone conclusion that, once again - country music goes on.

well cross Hallelujah off your list, its references are old testament.

The Buble is perfectly acceptable for some gentle Christmas crooning.

Some more drink and dance your ass off Canadian Christmas albums

Barenaked for the holidays ; Barenaked Ladies
Celine Dion ; chante Noel
The McGarrigle Christmas hour
Raffis Christmas album
Im sure those heavy rockers like Anne Murray, Rita MacNeil, Diana Krall and a host of others will get your guests rocking under the mistletoe.

I guess we should be thankful that the Bieber, Nickleback and Avril Lavigne have not released Xmas albums yet.

I was driving yesterday and on the country music channel the announcer said "And now Rolf Harris", I think it's the first time I said outloud "WTF"

A christmas song called something like "6 white boomers." It was crap and thank god he mentions the word australia in it, didn't want the Canadians thinking this was from my homeland :frown:

I keep hearing "Little Drummer Boy" which makes my blood run cold. I am old enough to know the link to the Hindley and Brady and have never lost that horror of association.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OggFor5VXtM this is all the evidence a person could need that there are some really crap christmas songs from the UK.

At times, I listen to online radio from the UK and other than bbc 6 music, uk radio can be as derivative as the Canadian versions.

Try living in QC. Anglo tunes with French lyrics. Horrible beyond belief.

It would be even better in the UK if it was on a standard frequency.

DAB is basically non existant in Canada....6 music is only available on the internet here as far as I know....satellite radio carries bbc radio 1 and the world service I think.

UK ones, without a doubt.
Your home, your choice of music.

They have to be educated, whether they like it or not.

Hope this got an airing.

I have seen Canadians wearing these boots, along with a similarly vacuous expression, so they should find these characters right up their street.

I think a good test of Canadian priorities would be to get out the Tequila, put it on repeat and see how long they stay.
Test to destruction:p

Well I get to try the theory out with our Canadian counterparts tomorrow night at the Christmas social where the main objective rather than collegial festive fun, is to apparently to show off our new toilet.

I can understand that.

When I tiled the bathroom, I practically drowned visitors in cups of tea until they had to go to the toilet, at which point I accompanied them to make sure they fully appreciated the precision of my grouting while answering the call of nature.
