I understand those working will either get paid by cheque or direct deposit - can that direct deposit be changed to ask your employer for a cheque which you would then cash at the RBC, TD or whatever the employer uses.

My employer would not give you a cheque. Bank deposit or no job!

Where I worked they changed to bank transfer only many years ago, even for part time and bank staff.

Now some car rental places may rent with debit, cash, or pre-paid cards with restrictions and a hefty deposit, but this varies by location, for example I think its NY state that says they can't require a credit card to rent, but in most places no credit card no car rental.

Hotels some will rent a room without a credit card with a cash deposit, and some wont, and cash deposit can range from 100 for the stay, and up, plus room and tax all paid for upfront at check in.

We require a 100 deposit + room and tax where I am if there is no credit card. When using a credit card we pre-authorize room and tax, plus a percentage above for incidentals.

I have worked in some hotels usually the more business oriented upscale chains, that are credit only, no credit card, no room, as these hotels cater to the corporate traveler they lose little if any business by going cashless.

More and more airlines are going cashless for in-flight purchases, few if any in the US still accept cash.

Not sure about Air Canada and Westjet as I don't fly those carriers.

I haven't had a job in about 10 years that offered paper checks.

Even the government of Canada is going to start to phase out checks and go direct deposit for most payments in the coming year or 2.

Westjet gives a discount for online booking/payment. Also we've needed a credit card to rent a car for about 35 years, I believe, and most hotels, (excepting the fleabags) want one. The last time I could pay cash in advance was in the mid 80's.

Don't have to be a flea bag hotel to accept cash deposits in leiu of a credit card.

Lots of mid priced hotels like Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn's and the like will take a cash deposit, will vary by property as each property is generally independently operated, but certainly don't need to be flea bag motel.

The deposits can be high though, highest I've seen in the hotels I've worked at was room and tax upfront at check in, plus an additional 200 per day deposit.

But generally the properties I've worked at have been in the 100-300 range deposit wise + room and tax.

In the US hotels will accept Visa debit or MC debit as a credit card since these cards can be pre-authorized like a credit card can.

Visa debit in Canada cannot, so they are treated like cash.

The old man used to get them as a benefit with work. Not sure they are so common now.

We used to go to Garfunkels with them.

Oh my goodness...talk about a blast from the past :D They were snazzy looking too with all the denominations

Thanks, I wasn't sure. I've tried and tried to fly on both over the years, but neither want to be competitive with the US airlines flying from YVR when I have flown.

WJ was giving out drinks free on the flight I took in December. That was because the flight was delayed.

Remember when banks used to send your cheques back to you after they'd paid them.

It was always funny to see the cheques you'd written while completely pissed... handwriting you could barely read, made out to LEFKAS KEBAB HOUSE, THREE POUNDS AND 75p ONLY...

:rofl::rofl::beer:

Does anyone write cheques anymore? lol

I remember those days in the late 90's when I got my first account, banks even gave free checks back then (In the US anyhow) and it could take a week or more to clear the account.

I don't even buy checks anymore, and haven't needed one for several years, my current landlord even takes debit or online bill payments....

They won't take them in shops. I however will take a cheque should you decide to buy one of my paintings.
