Canadian Thanksgiving..?
 

Hey there folks!!!

Hope y'all are well...

I was just wondering what happens @ Thanksgiving in Canada. Last time I celebrated was an American Thanksgiving in New York with my Ex and some of his friends (was all v odd - as was my ex)...

So - I know it's a long w'end and frankly most of my friends are away, but is there things I should be doing, things I should see?

I'm staying in Vancouver so don't have anywhere to go for the day - do pubs / restaurants do anything or are they all shut?

Ideas on a postcard....

Don't know what happens in Vancouver re bars, Restaurants etc, but i'm pretty sure they're all open here in Calgary. It's just like a normal Bank Holiday where all the stores are luring you in with sales.

For Canadians that have family nearby then they'll spend it together just like we probably would at Christmas. Having no family around us last year, it felt a bit like Boxing Day with nowhere to go (iykwim)

The Sunday and the Bank holiday Monday both seem as important as each other.

Well without the latter odness, it's kinda the same as the US. However I would guess that people in Canada eat less. Lots less. :sneaky:

Family and friends time, chill out, eat well, sit back and reflct on the year etc.

Like an early mini-Xmas, in fact a lot like Xmas but just without the snow and pressies. Unless you live in Alberta, in which case it's a lot like Xmas but without the pressies.

I love Thanksgiving because it's like Christmas without all the pressure and commercialism. Thanksgiving dinner is always at my house, and always revolves around a hockey tournament - my daughter organises a Thanksgiving minor hockey tournament - so sometimes it has be early in the day, sometimes later. This year we will be having dinner on the Monday, around 7pm. Just as long as the family is all together, that's what matters.

Bandit, all the stores will be open, many restaurants feature turkey dinner. If the weather is good, a stroll along the seawall after dinner would be lovely!

If it snows you know I'll be laughing outrageously, and calling you an old ****** ha ha.

Was it not the past two Februaries when I was mooching about it shorts and t-shirt taking the sun on my face while you shovelled your driveway for the next three months ?

As much as it troubles me, let's be oh so British and discuss the weather.:frown:

I'll take that chance as you most likely call me that anyway. :p

Technically I haven't shovelled a driveway in many years February or not, but we wont go into that. :sneaky::p

I didn't say anything at all about Kelowna weather and really couldn't care, just that you know jack sh*t about Alberta/Calgary weather.:D

Apart for the disagreements about Alberta weather - which I don't actually care to know as I'm not there.... Thanks for your replies....!

Just wanted to know what normally happened, and for those without family if there would be places open to use lonely singletons!!!!

I will no doubt take a stroll on the sea wall if the weather is nice, and perhaps try and get a meal at Cardero's.... The views are awesome there.

For us it has typically involved a family dinner at one of the various homes (typically a ham). I don't think we're doing anything this year.

As far as Ottawa/Gatineau is concerned, the shops will be open, which is a good indication that pretty much everything will be.

Are you sure they are open on the Monday....I thought they are closed at least here on the 'light' side.

The Rideau Centre is open. The Promenades de l'Outaouais is open. Home Depot in Gatineau is open. The Royal Canadian Mint is open (so presumably the other museums). The Byward Market is open.

The place looks pretty open to me.

Christmas without the commercialism is a great way to look at it. Most stores wont be open.
