3 yrs seems to be the norm...

And if you change or upgrade your plan within those 3 years, they take you back to day 1 of a 3 yr plan (we had this when we added one of the kids to our family plan - adding an extra person took us back to day one of 3 yrs.....) Having said that the unlimited texts are a boon with a teen using them! PRobably far cheaper to add her and extend the plan by 3 yrs than pay for a teen using a PAYG and texting her friends all day long!

I recently got an iphone and my first three year contract. They gave me a $400 welcome credit which they said was to cover the costs of breaking any contract that I was currently in.

They also offered many other features for free. Before this I have stuck with unlocked prepay phones.

As has been said you can get monthly contracts which you can cancel at any time. Just buy or get given a phone (I currently have about 5 phones hanginging around our place that noone is using, two of which were given to us by friends after they upgraded).

I hate to tell you this, but you are prob still looking at a 3 yr contract.

We have a family plan with Rogers - Mr Chookie and I have blackberries, Kid 1 & 2 have android smartphones (simply because that was what was provided), kid 3 has a "normal" phone... (Kid 4 is still too young for a phone in our opinion)

We got a "new" 3 yr plan activated when we added kid 3 to the account at Christmas despite the fact that we have been with them for 5 years prior... Every time you make a change to your account, it starts a new 3 yr period it s
