Canada to rejoin British Empire?

Re: Canada to rejoin British Empire?
It looks like it.
Last month the government announced the reintroduction of the terms Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Airforce. They were dropped in the 1960s.
Yesterday I read that all Canadian diplomatic missions are to now display pictures of the Queen. She is admittedly the head of state but it looks like a step backwards for a country that has spent decades trying to establish its own identity.

I agree with you. The requirement for non-state organizations to have to print things in both official languages is nonsense - let the consumer decide (I appreciate that the state is not having to spend anything here).
I fail to see how a few piccies of Liz will cost loads of money and, again, you need to explain the justification for removing them and renaming everything by those previously in charge.

As for the bilingual thing, the main problem with it is that if you submit evidence to a parliamentary committee, it has to be bilingual, which obviously makes it difficult to make your opinion known.

Well first of all, my understanding is this happened because the Minister of Foreign Affairs visited an embassy recently that didn't have the picture of the Queen up, they usually do, so he issued a directive to make it clear the picture should be up. Not exactly a monumental issue, but of course the liberal press back east have to do everything they can to put the knife into Harper.

The Supreme Court of Canada does not have such a stipulation and I can't think of a higher authority than that

How about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? I think that has quite a bit to say about language.

It does and, of course, it is the Supreme Court that interpreta it. I dont believe the Charter says anything about having to submit anything in both languages but I am happy to be corrected
