It's funny because if there was not market for oil, there'd be no problem.

Canada has always had a resource economy, whether it be from Fur back in the early colonial days, to Lumber, Metals (e.g. the Gold rush), Water etc. Oil is no different, so being shocked how much effort is put into it is just naive, extracting and selling resources are ingrained in the culture at this point.

We haven't moved on from that mindset one iota and will be/are being made to look like fools for it.

If you want to drive, have trains, airplanes and so on, you need oil. Canada has oil so may as well sell said oil and benefit from it.
Until oil can be replaced, why sit on it and make nothing?

I never mentioned oil (this time). I just pointed out the inherent danger of relying on the exportation of natural resources as the overwhelming focus of the national economy.
