Calgary Meet Up !!!!

Hi,

just wondered if there was a Calgary meet up planned for the future. If not is anybody interested in one?

The reason I ask is that we, ( me,hubby, 3 yr old,and babe to be born) will be in Calgary for about 3 months from mid November....hoorahhhhh

Apart from looking forward to our new Canadian arrival, we would love to meet some of you.

Flying out on 9th Nov, baby due mid dec and fly back to UK ( only cause we have to) on 26th Jan08.

Can we find a pub with a play area and a creche??

We'd be up for that too - I'll put my 9 year old in charge of Children's Entertainment!

Seriously - some pre-Xmas socialising would be lovely if we can throw some dates into a pot .....

I've just had an idea - depending on how 'due' you are in mid-December, perhaps we could book a room at the hospital and we could have a 'quiet' little get together to wet the baby's head? They wouldn't mind, I'm sure. Twenty people you've never met before, and their various offspring, wandering the corridors looking for the knackered, excited new mum ... looking and feeling your best, of course.... just a thought ?!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Canadian pubs don't admit children, and they don't have children's areas. It is one of the eternal complaints, like the lack of good cheese, lack of good haircuts, two weeks' annual leave, yadda, yadda, yadda.

It may not sound romantic to some of you but, if kids are going to be involved, how about a family diner, like White Spot or Smitty's? If people want to find out what Cochrane is all about, how about the Smitty's in Cochrane? It's the best Smitty's I've ever been into. I know it's not central to Calgary, but it does kill two birds with one stone (it admits kids and it enables you to check out Cochrane at the same time).

You don't mind an alcohol-free get together, do you? After all, so many of you cite the drunks in the UK as one of your motivations for moving to Canada. :p

Anyway, regardless of what type of a get together it is, I'm up for it (if it's during the evening or on a weekend).

Hi Judy,

So glad you are about to sort us out,:):D sounds good. Yes if a weekend or evening suits you that is good for us.It would be lovely to meet you.... will check out how viable it is for us to come to Cochrane.

Just for clarification, Top Cat, I live in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, so please don't feel obliged to hold the get together in Cochrane on my account. (Cochrane is a satellite town to the northwest of Calgary.) However, with that said, I will drive to Cochrane if others have a burning desire to hold the event there.

Judy, I know that you are the undisputed 'font of knowledge' for all things Calgary, but if a bar or pub has a restaurant licence, then it can admit kids.

Since you've weighed into the discussion, oh wise one, how about suggesting a place?

How about Brewsters in the SE ?

It has a kiddie area and an "adult bar". Like a Wacky Warehouse in the UK but without the Wacky Warehouse

http://www.brewsters.ca/locations.html

I have only been to the Bonavista location so can't comment upon the others

Judy, I wasn't trying to 'shoot you down' at all, just wanted to clarify that it wasn't simply a case of saying it had to be non-licensed. Certainly no offence was meant.:o

I've taken my kids into the Spaghetti Factory at Eau Claire, where they got colouring pencils, and we had a okay meal. Decent family style restaurant, though gets horrifically busy at the weekends.

And quite a bit more upscale is Buchanan's pub/restaurant on 3rd Ave SW - the kids got given crayons and felt tip pens to draw on the tablecloths. That made their day, I can tell you! They also have a private room, and quite possibly the best wine list and whisky bar in Calgary.

Here's a list that people might want to read... hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestions, Jingsamichty. Both Spaghetti Factory and Buchanan's would be convenient for people who wanted a central meeting place.

Thanks also for the attachment listing child-friendly restaurants in Calgary. It's a useful list.

Almost Canadian's suggestion of Brewster's is good too. I imagine people with children would appreciate the kiddie area.

Has anyone ever been to Chuck E Cheese in NE Calgary near Sunridge Mall at all - I recall it has been mentioned on here before as a good place for kids, although I don't quite know what the adult offer is like there and how the set up works (it bills itself as some sort of kids entertainment centre)

We are flexible on location as we are without kids, although a weekend or evening (esp. Fridays) would be preferable for us.

It's a suitable place for kids' birthday parties and the like. The food is ....... how do you Britons put it? ....... dire.

Something central might be best for everyone, then we wouldn't be favouring any quadrant, especially as people are from all over the city.

It could always be a saturday lunch time, if it suits people more.
Just a suggestion......

So, can anyone suggest some good central places for a meet up that caters for people with and without kids???

Re: Calgary Meet Up !!!!

I vote for Buchanan's or Spaghetti Factory, both of which Jingsamichty suggested and both of which are central.

The Brewster's on 11th Avenue SW is centrally located, but it won't do for our group. My husband, son and I had lunch there today. Unlike its counterparts in the suburbs, it does not admit minors.

Yes, just in Calgary 'for a few months' then still planning to head to Edmonton. Things are very fluid at the moment, so I could probably end up being based at either. I'd be happy enough with either, they're both nice places - just thankful that nobody is suggesting Fort MacMurray any more!!

Hi all,

I expect everyone will be busy nearer to christmas... well I sure will as baby is due 16th Dec.

Would anyone object to a saturday afternoon near to end of November??? Central would be good for us, would be lost north of city and dont want to be too far away from Rockyview hosp...( just in case ).

Was thinking Nov 24th or Dec 1st??? Any thoughts....over to you all

Re: Calgary Meet Up !!!!

Afternoon of Nov 24th or Dec 1st is fine for me.

Nov 24th may suit some people better. By Dec 1st annual office Christmas parties are starting to take place, and some people might have to leave our gathering fairly promptly to get ready for their evening function.

Suggested venue:

The Old Spaghetti Factory
222 - 3rd Street SW
Tel. (403) 263-7223

I've been to Old Spaghetti Factory, and I refreshed my memory by looking up its website. I compared it with the website of Buchanan's. I felt that Old Spaghetti Factory was more affordable, and so might suit a broader spectrum of people. Buchanan's prices seemed higher to start with, and on top of that we would have to pay a surcharge if there were eight or more of us.

Postscript. Buchanan's website also stated that they do not split bills for groups. I don't know yet whether we each want to pay our own way or whether we want to pool our money and pay together. But, if we went to Buchanan's we wouldn't be given the option of deciding for ourselves.

Just a thought but, if anyone lives in a lake community how about pricing up how much it is to hire the center, or one of there rooms for an afternoon or evening. Then we could maybe just all bring a dish or two.

Obviously pay a ticket price or something to cover the hire cost. Just a thought but it may work depending on the price.

Oh I cant find a community website with a price for hire on, was thinking of Chapparel where I have been before for a do.

Hi Roos. Just checked out the fees page for your center but I couldnt see a price for Eve hire. Seems to be $80 per day wich I didnt think was too bad for 8 hrs, not that we need all that. Would you mind trying to find out what the Eve price would be to see if it would work or not.

Hi, Ranjeet, and welcome to the forum.

The person who started this thread, Top Cat, was going to be flying to Calgary today.

No doubt when the Top Cat family has landed and recovered a little from jet lag, we'll get an update.

I'm still interested to know if the get together is going to be the last weekend in November or the first weekend in December.

Anyway, look forward to meeting you then.

Hi all,

Ive arrived in wonderful Calgary.... Had fantastic flight on friday with Zoom airlines. They were excellent, were expecting a heavily pregnant passenger and made sure I was ok and moved my seat to make me more comfortable....

My hubby and daughter flying out next friday so I making most of the rest!

Yes looking through the posts think the end of November date seems ok. Think one person cant make it that day.....

Any more thoughts or preferences?

Off to a Christmas market in 'Millerville ' today...

Take care all

Good to hear you've landed, Top Cat. Glad too that you had a pleasant flight. :)

I still think Old Spaghetti Factory is the place that ticks the most boxes for our group.

Nov 24th won't work for me - hubby home from the US for that weekend - not seen him for a few months so got some catching up to do of my own:o hey Ranjeet - we have a lot in common - We have been in Canada roughly 1 year too, moved from the US having spent the past 6 years there - I have no complaints about anything in Canada - I have lived places like Atalnta and Memphis - I rest my case - although last port of call was New Jersey and I loved those crazy angry Yanks there!! :)
