It's a complete and total myth that the NE has more crime, have a look at the CPS crime reporting website. http://crimemap.calgarypolice.ca/

There seem to be a lot more assaults in the NE over the last 6 months than other parts of the city though. Maybe that is why people say it has higher crime?

There was a time when I may have been moving to Calgary and the one thing I remember being told was don't live in the NE because if was the higher crime/rough part of the city.

Never ended up going though.

Generally speaking, crime has gone down, despite the population increasing significantly over the same period. Have a read of page 6.
I can't argue with statistics. I am talking from a personal view point. It seems to me that when I watch the evening news that there are more stories regarding assaults and criminal activity.

My friend is one of the two Calgary Police helicopter pilots, and I hear a lot of stories from him that don't even make the news.

Maybe not.

But some occupations reflect the individual or influence them in a way other jobs might not and it's not unreasonable to think that a parent might pass that on to a child.

It doesn't mean the kid has to, or will follow, similarly but it might make it more likely. Or it might cause rebellion.

Police, nursing, teaching, dietician.....these might be the sort of occupations or vocations where the parent might pass certain ideas onto their kids with a bit more emphasis than parents of different occupations.

Go on...

It seems to me that
There's a concept in criminology known as: "telescoping", which basically means that the longer you live in one place, the greater your cumulative exposure to crime, so generally people tend to think that crime is getting worse even when the number of offences is going down.

Across the developed world there have been sharp drops in all kinds of crime over the past decade. Theories abound as to why, but two of the main theories is that the presence of smart phones makes it harder to get away with crime and on-line crime is lower risk.

Calgary was pretty safe to begin with and is even safer now.

Another one.

Neighbours weren’t familiar with who lived in the home and noted nothing unusual about it.

Nelson Hua has lived in the neighbourhood for three years and has seen one woman living in the property.
Ah, community spirit.
