Calgary gets Muslim Mayor
Naheed Nenshi, whose family was deported from Africa, and who grew up in one of the tougher neighborhoods of Calgary has just become Mayor, primarily due to the use of social media.
He grabbed lots of the younger, and inner city vote.
I think the redneck image has faded tonight.

Re: Calgary gets Muslim Mayor
I saw a brief interview with him on the National last night. Something he said struck me. I'm paraphrasing, but in response to a question about how a brown Muslim man became mayor of Calgary of all places, he said "In Calgary, it doesn't matter who your daddy is, what matters is what you bring to the table."
I think this is true for a lot of Canada and is one of the best things about living here.

As I have said on other threads, I thought we had all moved away from skin colour, accents, regligous views, sexuality etc.

Listening to him on CBC right now. I can see why he's won. IT has nothing to do with him being Muslim or not. HE's got some very interesting ideas about cities and making them better. I'd vote for him. A lot of what he values are the same as my values (i.e. more liveability, less dependence on cars etc).
