Re: current UK weather:
"Night-time temperatures are set to drop to -2C (28F) as a blast of cold air sweeps in from the North Sea."
"Kent, London, Surrey and Hampshire may see up to 6in (15cm) of snow overnight, as temperatures plummet."
"The good thing about this weather front that's coming in is we have had advanced notice of it so we are well prepared for this."

Hubby has just left for work (commutes into London), I checked the net before he left and no buses at all are running in London due to the 'adverse weather conditions', and our tube line is part suspended. I couldn't get on to the website for our mainline (suspect everybody else is trying to do the same) so he's gone to try that but has just phoned from the station to say the platform is packed and no sign of any trains.
Poor thing - he's managed to cycle 3 miles to the station in the snow but needless to say, the UK public transport has let him down!! We've just had a weeks holiday (in Val D'Isere in France where they had several feet of snow - think we brought some back with us!) and really needs to get to work to catch up with stuff. Oh well.

Yeah right - this is the UK they're talking about!

I don't think we are a bunch of wimps or pathetic (ref other thread re: weather). Generally the whole of the country does not get snowfall on this scale. The local councils do not own enough gritters (for this reason) to cover all of the nation's roads in the time-scale we would like; unless we want another hike in the council tax? Also, I think the novelty factor plays it's part via the media, because we don't: Why do we always run ourselves down? Most people I know have made it to work and just got on with it.
Yes, it is cold (by British standards) but as we don't usually experience day-time temperatures below zero, surely you can be more forgiving of how we handle this apocalypse?!!!
Bring on -25 and we will show the Canadians how it's done - not forgetting the windchill. Most of us watch Ice Road Truckers and have picked up a tip or two. Don't forget we are British and only 'do rain' with any finesse and know-how!

Maybe the British Army is not up to snow removal and that is why they are looking to recruit from countries that have real snow?

Around six million British workers have stayed home for the second day running due to adverse weather conditions. Estimated cost to the economy 3 billion pounds. Maybe we should have invested in a few more snow ploughs.
There has been talk that the Mayor of London should consult with other Mayors in Finland, Iceland and Canada for advice how to cope better next time. Snow seems to be a costly business
