British TV abroad?

Hello

From a few of the threads re. quality of TV / missing particular shows, I was wondering if anyone has experience of BBCiplayer etc & whether it is successful in Canada.

From a quick google, there are 'ways' of subscribing to from abroad, although I think its default setting is to limit to particular internet domains & hence UK. (this is about the limit of my understanding of the technical bit & could be incorrectly described:unsure:)

I'm not a big TV fan - tend to stick to dvds, a fair amount of which are US anyway, but the option might be nice.

Thanks
Bali

Yes, but after a couple of months they'll want you to begin subscribing. For about $25 monthly (not FilmOn)I get access to most UK channels live and BBC iPlayer and ITV player which I use almost every day. The monthly fee may seem excessive to some but at my stage of life it's a matter of want more than need.

Hi
We subscribe to an "identity cloaker" which costs about £30 for 3 months. We can get 4OD and ITV and iplayer.
4OD is really good cos they have full series of old programmes on the archives.

6 months so far and not a sign of having to pay. :)

So do we. It's ok - it has it's annoyances when streaming, but for downloadable content it's great. It sure beats the local crap anyway.

Thanks everyone, sounds to be some good options for when / if I get there.

Love the 'identity cloaker' - very Spooks!

I had a look at the website and it gave a list of subscription offers.
How come you get it for free...I'm puzzled:confused:
But would love to know.:D

Which one do you use?
I would be happy to pay that much to have access to BBc iplayer and the ITV one. I would simply cancel the cable package we have now, which I am sorely tempted to do anyway.

Re: British TV abroad?

Filmon is fantastic. I have used it for 8 months and have only been asked to subscribe when watching BBC2 but trying again later it works again. I watch xfactor live etc. It makes me feel so much more connected with back home. To subscribe for the year would be $99.50

If it comes down to it I will pay it. I would happily pay my cable provider if it was a choice.

You need to keep an eye on how many GB's you are allowed to download each month via your internet provider when using such a service. I use Rogers and I am allowed 60GB before being charged which I would never ever use up each month.

I am looking forward to watching Christmas stuff and children in need etc.

I seem to remember there was a skip option on the sign up box at the beginning. I don't remember why but a couple of weeks later something suggested signing up (but still no charge involved) had some advantages, so I signed up...but I still click skip on the sign up box and get connected easily enough.

Just watched the England-Brazil game on ITV and expect to watch Doctor Who tomorrow.:)

Re: British TV abroad?

You could always investigate a torrent site specializing in UK shows, for example, thebox.bz. I have used this, for example, to get the latest spooks, which I'll buy on DVD when it's released, but I want to watch it now.

Obviously there is a legality issue with torrents, and your ISP may throttle or prevent you from using P2P to download files.

Bob Nov 14th 2009 9:36 am

Re: British TV abroad?

torrent them....your allowed to down them, it's only the upping that's an issue in Canada.

You've then got uknova, thebox, eztv, bitmetv etc.

What am I doing wrong? Yesterday it required me to close the program and reconnect every five minutes, which made for rather disjointed viewing. Today, I've tried looking at BBC1, BBC2 and ITV1, but all just come up with a "scrambled" message.

Sorry...don't think I can help. :( Some time ago there were a couple of channels not working with something displayed about negotiations but since then even Eurosport has started working

I do remember that since I registered (but still not subscribing) there was one occasion when clicking 'skip' it behaved differently to signing on, but I always click skip and get connected.

Just remembered something....when the thread about this first appeared some people reported a problem that was solved by uninstalling and reinstalling...the modern equivalent of slapping the TV.

For those interested in watching some good current UK TV there is a new series showing on PBS. It's called Collision and started last night under the Masterpiece Theatre banner. There were two episodes last night and, in the east here, it's repeated on Saturday. Two more episodes next Sunday and the final one, I presume, the following Sunday. It showed on 5 consecutive nights last week in UK. I watched it last night and it was, IMO, extremely good. All episodes are currently on ITV Player.

first episode is a bit slow and dull, but worth sticking with it as it does get pretty interesting by the second episode once the back stories start going :)

If viewing UK reality shows makes someone feel connected then fair enough. I enjoy watching the occasional British program as well, and there are plenty of interesting ones available on PBS (basic cable package) without having to mess about with all this stuff.

The more I read of these threads, the more I appreciate the variety of TV available in Canada. Familiarity is not the same as quality.

I have no wish to 'feel connected', I just want to watch some good TV occasionally. Yes, 95% of UK TV is shite like X-factor, but that doesn't mean the remaining 5% is not superior to anything you get here. Cos it is, by quite some margin.

a) We get most of the 5% here at some point or other.
b) You have seen everything here?

a) No you don't. There are plenty of shows that I watch that never make it here; and of those that do a fair chunk of them are edited down to make space for ads.
b) I haven't watched everything no, but I have looked at the schedules and that's enough to put me off.

I cannot think of any Canadian TV that I have set to PVR; there is Jon Stewart and new Simpsons episodes, but that amounts to about an hour a week once the ads and boring interviews have been removed (and that's US TV anyway).

The rest of my viewing is either the BBC or Channel 4. I don't bother with ITV cos that's as bad as the crap you get here.

You have the advantage on me. I generally have to watch a bit of a program before I can decide if it is any good or not.

UK TV is just better than US and Canadian TV. To suggest otherwise is just silly.
I am not really interested in arguing the relative merits of national broadcasters. I will happily concede that if I was required to chose one broadcaster's output to watch for the rest of my life it would be the BBC.

The point is that there is plenty of intelligent, informative and entertaining TV available here, often without commercials, if you can be bothered to search it out. To suggest otherwise is VERY silly.

Intelliegent and informative shows may exist. But there are not plenty of them, a few maybe, but plenty, I don't think so.

Some PBS docs are ok (a step up from the discovery channel for sure), but not really good enough for me to go out of my way to watch them. Nature and Nova are good examples of the workmanlike stuff that you get can get here if you look for it. Good enough in a pinch, but not exactly david attenborough.

It is free but eventually you might see a message asking you to subscribe. You need to keep an eye on the bandwidth you have used. I have Rogers for my ISP and I can log in and see how much bandwidth I have used. If I went over 60 GB I would be charged. I only use about 20GB a month though and I do lots of work on my computer.

I use the British Online Tv Access Account from here https://www.pc-streaming.com/store/. It really is good and gains access to everything available BBC, iplayer, ITV, ITV Player, CH4 On-Demand etc.
They have also just introduced an Ireland package for all those Irish ex-pats missing RTE.

For those interested, series 14 of Top Gear began last week (and hopefully it's better than the "low budget" series 13 ).
