British food in Canada
Hi eyeryone!
Just wondering what I will miss food-wise when I live in Canada... Vegemite, Mr Kipling Angel Slices, Tunnocks Teacakes, crumpets [?]. :cake: On the plus side - I LOVE TIM HORTON'S especially the glazed cinnamon roll, Canadian bread is delicious, and I'm addicted to the Cadbury's 99 calorie toffee infused choccie bars! So, what do you miss, and what makes up for it? Do you know of any shops that sell British food in Toronto? |

Not vegemite though as Ive a feeling it falls foul of some food legislation or other in NAmerica...but its Australian anyway isnt it? Crumpets...widely available. Mr Kiplings..not so much, but then we have other equally lethal local substitutes. After nearly 11 years I cant say there is anything I particularly miss that I havent figured out how to make myself (ie a decent onion baji) Being able to throw a big fat juicy steak on the grill for minimal expense makes up for no jaffa cakes I guess. |

The supermarkets.... failing that there are a few expensive britsh food stores and out here in Belleville our local ethnic store can order most things if they are not in stock.

Re: British food in Canada
If you look back on previous threads you're going to find all types of contradictory posts. You said that Canadian bread is delicious, others have posted that it sucks. Same for many other products such as bacon, vegetables, fruit, sausages etc. Resign yourself, that if the products you crave are not available here, you'll either have to arrange family from UK to send or bring them when they visit. The third choice is just learn to live without them or adapt to Canadian "equivalents", which I imagine what most BE's do.

Vegemite's available here (in BC at least). Mrs Rich got some from a supermarket yesterday.

Sure - I just wanted people's opinion as to what UK food they missed, and what they bought instead
