Toronto has a pretty large number of meetup groups too. In the early days of living here, it's how I met and made most of my friends, a lot of whom I'm still close to today. At one time I think we ran about 10 of the Toronto groups, but few of us are involved with meetup anymore as we've mostly moved on to other things.
I still run a photography group and organise trips from time to time tho...

Over on the NZ forum they have a section for meet ups. We should have one here on the Canada forum as well, that might help newbies connect with others...

Agree with James. Folks are still hanging indoors (**** knows why, not as if there's been a winter). In a month or so the city comes alive...

I don't understand this obsession of 'fitting in' or making friends with the locals. As Novo pointed out they either babble on about icing hockey or reminisce about growing up in a flat brown shit-hole of a place that they've left for good reason. If I were you, I'd find a local rub-n-tug and ignore the locals.

What's a "rub-n-tug"
And who would one make friends with if not the locals? Other immigrants?

I couldn't agree more with your comment about Brits and football. It's like the UK revolves around a bunch of overpaid, over hyped, under worked men who really need a reality check. The resignation of Fabbio Capello and the whole Redknapp story took up more than half the time of last night's news on the BBC. The mind boggles.
I actually used to like football and enjoyed watching a good game
But this was 15 years ago. You know, before it got to the ridiculous state mentioned above.
To BobbyN - I hope you get to meet up with people soon. I emigrated 16 years ago and it did take a while to make friends. Luckily my first job was in a really friendly company with lots of people my age, and it went well from there. Will have to start all over again later this year when I move countries yet again!
Hopefully you will start making friends quickly once you start work, at the latest. Good luck

Totally agree, i loved football as a kid in the 80s and 90s but the day andy cole was bought for £7million, it was all downhill from there. Used to be a better game when men played it.
Anyway all the best with the move and thanks
