Drinking Decline UK The report hints that economic and healthcare warning pressure has caused growth to peak then taper off within the last decade. So still booze sodden but we only need ankle boots.... and plenty of cleaners to sweep away the vomit when the drinking is not at home on the sofa as the gathering trend seems to be as supermarket booze is the cheapest option. Note that the supermarkets are as always extremely aggressive when it comes to countering budget tax price increases to maintain stable pricing and simply push the price increases back to the brewers/distributors who then load up the charges to the pubs to compensate. Then there's the recent phenomenon of JD Wetherspoons and their beer festivals/promos which have drastically reduced the price of pub draught beer for serious boozers. |
Re: Booze sodden Britain a myth?
There is absolutely nothing to worry about. Mr. Cameron's Big Society is standing-by to sort out all problems in the UK.
All those who hate living in Canada/Oz/NZ etc, etc will be able to pull up sticks and return to their paradise, but no doubt they'll find something else to whine about. |

Re: Booze sodden Britain a myth?
Maybe drinking less but let's not forget the fantastic array of synthetic drugs now available!. I'm sure the combination would net out to a worse end result than booze alone!
I'd imagine being beaten senseless by a gang of louts high on PCP would be as much, if not more fun, than the same group drunk on 20/20. |
Re: Booze sodden Britain a myth?
Pah, what a load of crap. You can get studies to say anything now-a-days. I'd rather gather my evidence from what people reckon.

I have noticed a lot of pubs closed down when I was last in Manchester, probably something like one in five, and many that were open were dead and very run down. And its not just back street pubs that were closed, but main ones as well.
This is the old Pitt and Nelson in Ashton which had been a pub since the 17 th Century: Attachment 98962 |

Well according to these results it is. Depressing as it seems, the image that has been propagated by the tabloids and breakfast tv that Britain is a 24 hour binge drinking hell hole is sadly not the reality. It seems that alcohol consumption has decreased substantially in the last decade. What are we to do now if self-satisfying scorn is no longer valid? Maybe we have to be contented with individual anecdotal evidence that there are still gangs of rampaging drunk teenagers hanging out round back of the shops? I don't care what the evidence shows, I still think the UK has gone to the dogs, but alas it appears a little more steadily.
Drinking Decline UK Here's my answer to the findings in this report: 6 cans for a fiver. |
Re: Booze sodden Britain a myth?
Yes, I agree. The ONS are always providing evidence for things like this. If they had done their research properly they would be asking people how much booze they reckon other people are drinking. That will provide a more accurate answer than mere sales figures for alcohol.

Re: Booze sodden Britain a myth?
Maybe drinking levels have dropped due to the fact people cant afford it anymore:)
