Hi there,
I've been blogging semi-professionally (i.e. alongside my day job) for the last seven years. The business I've built off the back of it is funding my Canada emigration in March.
Wordpress really is the way to go. You can start small (and free) while you experiment with your blog design and writing style/content and then build up as quickly or as slowly as you wish.
The best advice I can give you is to have a play at Wordpress.com, don't put any pressure on yourself to be as popular as the Huffington Post in your first few weeks (or months, or years!) and have fun sharing your thoughts!
Always happy to help with any Wordpress/website queries (if I can!)
Good luck!
Terry
