I had a pair. Never actually used the packs and then they (the heat packs) disappeared. I think they had to be agitated rather than microwaved.

I agree.
Funny, whenever warm clothing comes up, it's often pointed out that most of the time most people aren't outside for long anyway.
My problem is cold fingers and holding the snow shovel transmits the cold through what I previously thought were 'tough' gloves. Mittens have definitely helped. I think I paid less than $10 for a pair.

The downside is they gt a bit damp when out in the snow and if I need to go out again they're already cold.

So a spare pair is the answer. $20 for two pairs sounds better than $100 plus.
