Default BC Dog Owners Advisory

Those in BC if you haven't seen this just wanted to make people aware that there is an unknown strain of kennel cough infecting dogs in the province even dogs vaccinated for it have become ill.

The concern is how aggressively the disease has spread between dogs even when the dogs had no close contact.

The SPCA first began to notice the illness in their facilities in July, and now its been reported in the wider community as well, especially in the Kamloops area.

As tests for known viruses and bacteria came back negative the SPCA is seeking assistance from specialists and diagnostic labs to try and determine the causes, which is believed to likely be a viruses of some sort.

If your dog shows these symptoms you are to isolate your dog.

- Coughing
-Runny Nose
- Runny Eyes

Even if vaccinated your dog may still be at risk. So far no dogs have died or become seriously ill.

I only came across this when I googled dog coughing as Charlee has been coughing a bit today, but so far no runny nose or eyes, so I will most certainly be keeping a closer watch on her to make sure she is doing okay, she has never coughed like this before, so it was something I noticed being out of character for her.

I wonder if the new 'kennel cough' being reported could be covid. https://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/covid-19/pets.html

Hope Charlee feels better soon and it's just a bit of dust that's got into her lungs..

She hasn't coughed since yesterday and is behaving normal, so I think it was just dust or tickle in her throat.

COVID did cross my mind, also been more than 1 report of animals in zoo's catching it, and pets come into far closer contact with humans than any zoo animal typically does.

I just found that in 2018 a novel canine corona virus was discovered in Malaysia a few years ago, CCoV-HuPn-2018.

In 2003 UK researchers isolated a corona virus in dogs similiar to human corona virus HCoV-OC43 (also infect cattle) serological studies in 2006 in US & Canada found antibodies in dogs as well.

So it isn't far fetched that the corona virus that causes COVID could have mutated to infect dogs more easily or maybe it could be the 2018 novel canine corona virus or something completely new.

Or a reaction to the smoke maybe? Glad she's better.
