I know bacon has been covered here before, but just thought I'd mention I enjoyed a nice bacon sarnie (I'm from the South) at 5am today while watching the wedding. (We managed to find some British style bacon.) With lashings of HP sauce.

I was watching CNN's coverage for a bit, and Piers Morgan convinced Anderson Cooper to try a bacon butty. It was the worse looking bacon sandwich ever. A burger bun with a chunk of dead pig in it. Probably bought hastily from one of the vendors on site. Naturally he was unimpressed.

In summary. Bacon Butties good, Piers Morgan, still a Twat.

I prefer the bacon (streaky) that most Canadians buy. I think it has a better flavour than the lean and sometimes tasteless English/Canadian variety. Also adding a fried egg ( over easy) makes a tasty addition. I also prefer a Loblaws Cheese bun rather than plain bread.

I agree the bacon you buy here that is supposed to be English style is a little bland.

Your sandwich idea does sound pretty good, but I still prefer the English style on white bread with HP sauce.

My Parents, and Grandparents, generations practically lived on bacon sandwiches. For me it's a little trip down memory lane.

Having being born in the 30's I don't think of much so called traditional foods as being that memorable. It's only since the influence of Italian, Chinese and Indian food that the British food choices have improved. Most of what I remember tended to be rather bland.

I was referring to visiting my Grandparents house, and rarely leaving without a bacon sandwich and several cups of tea. I know it's probably nostalgia, but bacon sandwiches are still a treat for me.

You are probably quite right in what you say. I think we have all become accustomed to having a great deal of choice these days, and we take that for granted. Of course, that's a good thing. Remember, also, that a great deal of the food we eat today had it's origins in simple peasant food too. Pizza, paella, curry, pasta carbonara etc. Even bubble and squeak has had a make over.

When I was in Vancouver I asked a girl on a butchers counter if they sold the other end of the bacon and not the streaky stuff. I got a very blank look... Then was told something along the lines or "I dont know it all comes out of a packet"... A year later when in Torronto and then in Ottawa I was pleasently supprised to find Pea-meal ham (Which was Back Bacon) and the another place selling Back Bacon called... "Back Bacon" - Score!!

Thats the english style Ive eaten hundreds of bacon butties from many a transport cafe in the UK and never had it like that I think the HP sauce is an optional extra on your part.
Question why do north americans insist on bacon being cremated, it physically hurts my mouth to bite into the plate shattering brittle stuff they call bacon.
