This is maybe a daft question, but here goes
Is it the car or the person that is insured ? and can you have a "named "
driver on your policy?
Thanks

Hi,
It's the car you're insuring with ICBC. They don't have 'named' drivers. Instead you're referred to as the 'principle' driver (the one who drives the car the majority of time). If they found out a non-principle driver was driving most of the time, it could negate your coverage (don't know how they would prove it though!).
I've just changed my ICBC insurance from my 1981 Chevy Caprice to a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser. It's now $166 a month for my insurance. My partners is just under a $100 a month with his old truck. We've been here since 2005.
Hope this helps,
Sarah

You can also put on age and experience restrictions, such as no drivers under 25 years old, minimum 10 years experience. Some policies from third party insurers require 10+ years of North American experience, this is in the small print though.

the savings would be only for insurance which goes over the basics required by law. icbc sets the premiums for those basics. http://www.icbc.com/insurance/insura_getsta.asp

of course. i just tried to point out a difference to other provinces.specially since the basic liability coverage is so low, at least having additional coverage for that makes more than sense to me.
thanks for sharing your experience.

Also take into account that if there is a claim, there are two insurers (loss adjusters) to deal with, ICBC and the insurer used for the add on. The difference for us was so low, we stuck with ICBC, decided it would not be worth the extra aggravation if we had a claim.
