Re: Is anyone techy? Data usage woes
We have it bundled with phone and TV. My only cost complaint is the TV part because very little 'live' TV is viewed here.
We're approaching the end of the three year deal. I know everyone says threaten to leave and they'll offer a reduction but negotiation like that is not my strong point.
The thing is I look at the cost and even comparing with the non discounted price I cannot find a cheaper alternative. Rogers does a comparable package for what we pay now but only because of their discount and theirs is only a year.
I often wonder if "skinny" TV and separate internet could be cheaper but the Sportsnet/TSN channels are important to me and by the time the cost of those is added, plus additional boxes, it's actually more than the non discounted bundle price.
We tried the threaten to cancel with Shaw and it worked the first time and they extended the promo, but hasn't worked since, they were happy to just cancel the service, but as Telus wants a deposit, there really is no other option so Shaw it is.

We ditched broadcast TV years ago, never missed it, just stream now. CBC can be streamed, Netflix, Amazon Prime. Plenty to watch and a great saving on bundled TV, most of which is garbage. Pay no more that $20 a month.

Exactly what we do.
After a year we added up what we'd spent on Netflix subscription, stuff we bought on iTunes and even the hardware ( Chromecast and Apple TV)
Still came to less that 6 months cable

The current skinny package (BellAliant) doesn't allow for themed add-ons - and that's what the football channels are. Taking the next one that does allow the football add-ons (and those channels only) takes it to $70 and that's already more than the TV element to my bundle costs.
The football is the issue for me. Unofficial streams are watchable but subject to interruptions and sometimes low quality. The official streams won't give me the selection I have from TV and they will actually cost more than I would save by dropping the TV.
The internet we have right now is essential and no matter how I work it - Bundle of 3; bundle of 2; take internet from one provider and TV from another - the amount I pay in addition to the internet/phone cost is actually a bargain for the reliable football offering.
If only I'd grown up not being interested in it

we did this for a while and watched Netflix and UK tv but for a number of reasons we went back to satellite. Only Netflix anduK tv had adequate captioning, then the VPN stopped working well for UK stuff plus even when it did the BBC was very juddery so we went back to satellite and Netflix. We've a months trial on Amazon right now.

We don't VPN stuff anymore. Buy it if needed. Even with that it worked out cheaper.
I will admit to not paying attention to what has closed captions or not
