Out here in the Far East, graduation wear seemed to range from jeans and baseball caps to suited and booted. I think wedding type attire should be a safe bet. On my graduation in October I opted for my one and only suit and a tie.
The ceremony was eternally dull in terms of waiting for one's turn. (Why are there so many people studying teaching when there are few jobs to be found? There was a hundred or so B.Ed graduates). Nice speech by the Chancellor - Rick Hillier, who's hand I have now shook. The only other amusement was watching the venerable Lt Gov of Newfoundland (John "I didn't take all the damn fish out of the sea" Crosbie) snooze his way through it all on the stage.

Well this has been a fascinating read, no really, it has. I am still none the wiser but I can successfully rule out stretchy leggings and cardigans.

Watch out dbd. If she develops an interest in baking or pickling, you're in trouble.

I've attended two at UBC. It tends to be a formal occasion. Dress up.

We went last year, it is a smart occasion - I would suggest somewhere between Sunday best & wedding. No hats necessary.
ie women - dresses or smart trousers, shoes (not flip-flops, not yoga pants - even if it is the west coast!).
men - at least shirts, trousers, shoes (ie not t-shirts, not jeans, not trainers). Many of the over 55s did wear suits & ties.
I don't think they had the fashion police out that day - you would not be refused entry whatever you wear.
Just enjoy the day - arrive early & take pics in the rose garden. Some faculties have lunches provided - but take the opportunity for celebrating at a decent restaurant later.
All that studying is worth a celebration.
