My granddaughter has had an iPod for about a year. Its not a Nano, just a regular iPod. It has worked fine so far. But about a week ago she tried changing the songs on it and said it didn't work. She tried again yesterday. After she left I plugged the iPod into her computer - the one at my house where she loads her music on the iPod - as I plugged it into the usb port - the screen lit up. When I opened itunes, the only device that it recognized was the CD. I tried looking in my computer but the device wasn't there.
So I brought it up and plugged it into my computer because I thought maybe it was a faulty usb cable. But when I plugged it in, the screen lit up for a short while because I noticed an Alicia Keys song shown on the screen.
However, it did not show up in My Computer. I know that port is F and nothing showed up.
I don't have itunes so I couldn't look there.
I don't think it can be the cable because when I plugged it in - the light came on the screen, so there must be some communication.
Anybody know about iPods got any idea?
Incidentally, earlier last year the iPod would not turn on and I spoke to Apple and they sent a courier and exchanged the iPod for a brand new one.

Not that I know of. But I doubt it. It will play the songs that are already on it. She just can't get the computer to recognize it.
It's obviously an issue with the iPod becuase my computer doesn't recognize it either.

I did find this link
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
But I suppose it will involve another call to Apple to get the thing fixed again.

Do you have iTunes installed on your computer? If you don't your computer won't recognise it. IPods won't show up in My Computer unless they are set up in disk mode, something not easily done and not all are capable of being set up as such.
You need iTunes installed, and need to use iTunes to get your songs on and off of it, it's not just a drag and drop mp3s into folders in Explorer like most other MP3 players.

Oh - well I will install iTunes on my computer and see if it recognizes the iPod.
Thanks for the tip.
Maybe she needs to uninstall Itunes.

I've found that some MP3 Players need USB 2.0 compatible ports, which some of the older computers don't have.

Her computer doesnt have a usb2 port - but it has been working for a year and just quit a couple of weeks ago, so I don't think that is the problem. Transfer is probably quite a bit slower than if she had usb2 - but the songs did transfer.
I actually phoned London Drugs. They are always really helpful and one of the guys there said to phone back when I was in front of the computer and he would help walk me through trying to fix it.
The iPod came from Future Shop - but they are never any help at all.

Hello there
I am not an IPOD expert, but when we plug our daughters into the computer, it does not always recognise it, we end up re-starting the computer with the ipod connected and switched on (unocked),if you open itunes it should then show up. You do have to have Itunes installed but you can download this from the apple site.
Good luck
Paul

Have you tried resetting the ipod, hold down menu and the middle button for a short while. It may not help but worth a try.
Mine recently did a similar thing and I took it to Apple and they gave me a new one without checking it at all. Was still under warranty though.

As or4ngecrush say, I'd reset it. Mine did exactly the same where it wasnt recognised on the computer. Reset and it came back fine, and has been for months now...
