Think classic British Tv
Orlon is the futuristic fabric "DuPont created the first acrylic fibers in 1941 and trademarked them under the name Orlon."
If it was Star Trek I'd say tribbles.

The Federation first encountered tribbles on space station K-7 but the ones on the Enterprise were pink - so not there!
