Decided to spend my tax refund on a turntable - and rather nice it is too. Looking forward to checking out all the used vinyl shops in Toronto. Upside is I can finally play all my 12 inch singles again (though changing the speed is not an easy matter). Downside is OH managed to acquire a Phil Collins LP.
No MP3 thingies in this house! What do others think, digital or analogue?

Weren't you heading back to the UK or am I thinking of someone similarly named ?

Not sure if this is a genuine question or you are trying to make some point Anyway, I frequently ponder the option, but no plans as yet. OH is quite liking it here now I think.

Digital. I've got 100's of LP's and I can't remember the last time I played one. Getting them out, brushing the dust off, loading them onto the player might be a kind of romantic ritual for some. For me it's a pain in the arse.

I don't have any music that is MP3 only though - only CD's. I guess this still counts as old school now-a-days.

It is quite a sensual experience. The bit I like is having to remember to take the stylus off at the end of side one (obviously I didn't buy one with auto-return or any convenience features). If you have any good LPs I'll make you an offer for a job lot!

My 13 year old has just discovered the joys of vinyl..

She bought an old radiogram for $5 from Kijiji & is trawling the second hand shops & flea markets for records..

I haven't played vinyl for 15+ years but I have to admit that it does somehow sound more "authentic"..

It has been quite nostalgic in one sense & the LPs & 45s as artifacts are fantastic (I still have all of my old vinyl) but I'm with Alan on the can't be arsed front.. It's a hassle..

Digital is so much more convenient. Years of sitting near the trumpets means my ears arent good enough to tell the difference anyway.

Vinyl is lovely and tactile though, and more or less forces you to listen to an album as a whole, rather than cherry picking. Sometimes thats a good thing, sometimes it subjects the listener to some real sonic crap.

Frankly Id rather be playing than listening anyway.

Only thing I miss about vinyl is gate album covers, especially all the Yes albums I sold for beer vouchers in my youth. If only I had kept them.

Analog every day of the week.

Bay / Bloor radio do demonstrations on Saturdays. Go along and open up your ears to the difference. Quite astounding.

I'd also recommend some good speakers. KRK Rokkit would be my choice. Ridiculous.

These sound like they should cost about 5x more.

Surely if you need to get esoteric high end equipment to hear the difference it cant be that big of a difference, and you could argue that listening to a humble CD on a high end hi fi system over a bread and butter future shop system would be an eye opener for many anyway.

Isnt most (all?) modern music recorded on digital systems now, regardless of whether the final delivery is analogue or not. I suppose if you never listen to anthing recorded since 1980 you might be onto something, but then I imagine that microphone/ recording technology might have surpassed the best of what was available in the analogue age by now anyway.

You've already said you have impaired hearing so....

I'll let others make their own minds up.
