Perhaps Armstrong should be allowed to compete. When thousands of roadside fans call him a cheat and the networks treat him with disdain rather than praise, the message may get through to him that he is a considered a loser. Without the drugs, and with widespread antipathy towards his efforts, he probably would not win any new races in the first place.

I now have as many Tour de France wins as Lance Armstrong.

See plenty of news...but that's the point. Real news, not the melodrama of some cheating clown.

Sorry, that rings hollow. This has been a major news story; if you've kept up with current events at all you'll have heard about this. You don't get to affect world weary internet cynicism just because you didn't watch it on oprah - I doubt anyone here watched it on oprah.

Suing people aside, if all his competitors doped as well (it appears that they did) did he "cheat"?

I would say yes, as they did.

He did cheat, but I suppose its that he cheated the fans and the general tour de france watching public. He did not cheat his fellow riders as it would appear they were all up to it.

But, do the fans really care?

It seems that every few months there is a "scandal" of improper substance use in top level sports. I say allow anything that people are prepared to take and let the consequences play out.

Is endurance training at altitude "cheating"? If not, why not?

Surely people he cheated included the riders he forced to drop out of his team and bicycling in general, the riders who weren't sponsored because he took the money, and the people around him, such as the team masseuse, who were bullied out of their jobs for fear that they'd grass him. It's not even just the clean riders that he cheated but also those with less access to drugs or less willingness to risk taking them.

The public don't care, professional sports are all about drugs and cheating, people still want to see a new home run record or Manchester United winning no matter how it comes about.

I found this bit of the article by Paul Kimmage in the Guardian priceless...

In the autumn of 1993, Greg LeMond and his wife, Kathy, were sitting at home in the suburbs of Minneapolis, when they received a visit from Linda Mooneyham, the three-times Tour de France winner has recalled. Her 21-year-old son, Lance Armstrong, had just become the world champion and she had travelled from her home in Texas for advice.

"What does he do now?" she asked. "What does he do with his money?"

"Well, let him find an agent – a good one with an attorney," LeMond replied. "And one word of advice – just be his mom."

They sat on the porch for a while and then moved inside to the kitchen. Linda had something else on her mind: "How do I make him less of an asshole. He doesn't care about anyone."

"Well," LeMond replied. "I can't help you there."

Saw something that made me laugh, it went something like .... how do you think we are getting new world records on a regular basis, drugs or the fact that the human race is evolving at such a rate that performance is increasing exponentially ?

For many sports it's logarithmically rather than exponentially.

It's not that he cheated - it's that he cheated dishonourably.

Is there an honourable way to cheat then?
