We are due to fly out to Alberta in July, but need we go so far?

Is it true that Edmonton is only six hundred miles from the Atlantic or is this another Guardian slipup?

More like six hundred miles from the Arctic...!
I read about that in the paper yesterday, some red faces about.

Out of curiosity, thanks to Google Earth, I measured that Edmonton's 1000 miles from the Arctic ocean, 300 miles from the USA border and about 730 miles to Winnipeg (which is often considered the half way point between the east and west coasts!)

Well, we just drove to Vancouver and back (from Calgary, not Edmonton though).
The most direct route (Trans Canada) over the mountains, took just about ten hours total and we did 2000km total round trip, including the (little) running around Vancouver - did more walking than driving. Was great fun!

Yeah I do - but I have to confess we did stop overnight in Salmon Arm (we did have a sixteen year old in tow). That was about the total drive time though.
It's funny - I thought she would have been past the "Are we there yet?" stage by now
We planned it to be more leisurely on purpose as it was our first time. So we lazed about the Hotel til lunch time taking advantage of the pool/hot tub and breakfast etc and were in Vancouver rush hour by 5pm (Then in traffic nose to tail for over an Hour trying to get to the Hotel!)
Having done it once, I would happily do it in one hit, starting out nice and early.
