Default Air Purifiers - smoking related (apartment dwellers?)

Anyone have any experience of air purifiers, specifically relating to neutralising cigarette smoke?

I understand they are probably much better for things other than smoke but they do claim to help.

While they may not be fantastic in the room where someone smokes, might they make a significant improvement if someone is suffering from smoke travelling from one room or apartment to another room or apartment?

If they do, any recommendations?

Typically I find a bucket of water, thrown over the smoker, tends to resolve the problem by the fact they leave.

I had this issue years ago with a duplex. The smoking tenants had to move. From then on, it was smoke free tenants only.

If one of your children are doing it, then 'they must smoke outside'. Even then, the second hand smoke lingers... its in their breath, clothes, hair, on the towels, even ends up on the furniture & it can take months or years to rid the place of it.

Its even a bigger issue for the reason second hand smoke travels through walls, electrical outlets, under the door, through window openings, through a cold air return & blown through the ducts in the heating system

The not so simple solutions which are expensive, the least expensive is always the room air purifiers, but no matter what, its not a 100% fix.

We have three of the expensive Oreck room filters - one in the living room, one in the centre hall & one in our bedroom

If only...but I'm not convinced the 'offenders' are actually offending.

Yep, found that one I'm using it as a guide for others.

I've found a reasonably priced one that claims a lot and is well reviewed. One can't always believe the reviews, of course, but in this case they do mention noise.

But I figure what's a little noise if it does a good job. Just run it to improve the air and turn off or to a lower setting when quiet is more important.

We had problems with cigarette smoke traveling into our condo. The property manager arranged for a plumber to check for gaps. He drilled a few holes in the walls where common pipes run from floor to floor. He found two unused holes behind the bathroom wall. The gaps were filled...problem solved.

Can't say I notice cigarette smoke, but someone is smoking pot near our unit, the bathroom in the late night/early morning will reek of pot, not sure if it's the upstairs snow boarders or someone below in the car park, I assume the smell is coming through the bathroom vent, but not sure.

Always possible of course, but never an issue with previous mixes of smokers/non-smokers.
There are other inconsistencies that make me think it's all exaggerated or a health change is to blame.

The air purifier option might just be the compromise option.

As suggested there might be route from another apartment ? Also check your main door seal or if it even has one, i use to smoke, rented a place in a smoking building and a none smoker in that building complained, manager asked me to fit a door seal, i politely declined as it a SMOKING BUILDING and suggested that the people who owned the building should fit a door seal. Always wondered why she took a place in with us as there where none smoking places empty, turned out it was a slightly shorter walk to Timmies and Safeways etc lol
But back on thread it may well be coming in through your main door so check out these door seals i was told you can buy.

Thanks for the alternative suggestions but for reasons I needn't go into please accept this is not about the simple transfer of smoke from one unit to another.

There's really no point in my going into it all but the tenant has actually suggested the solution I'm asking about.

This offers the least disruptive solution all round.

Sorry Js, I missed that reply.

So drifting up or down rather than along, say, from on a balcony on the same level?
