Erm, you could go to Osterley Park:

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main...-osterleypark/

it's on that end of the Piccadilly Line. Have you got 8 actual hours to kill, or is it 8 hours between flights (because that's probably more like 4-5 hours of actual free time).

EDIT: Oh, I see. Maybe I should actually have read your post. Osterley Park probably wouldn't kill 8 hours, would it. If you're feeling ambitious, you could try the Circle Line pub crawl.

Other than kitting yourself out with body armour for your time in Joburg you might think of the following.

- Yes, Windsor Castle is good for a few hours followed by a nice meal and a wander around the town. (if you like that sort of thing)

- Take a tube to Kew and have a walk around Kew Gardens and you can have a meal there too. There are some others to see too(if the weather is clear) www.greatbritishgardens.co.uk/

- Take a trip on the Thames. (many to choose from) http://www.thamesweb.co.uk/windsor/r...p01/index.html

- Hampton Court Palace?

- There's always the option of going into central London and just taking in the sights and sounds of the city - perhaps do the open top bus tour? (if you are not familiar with London)

There's loads to do, so have a great time, and be careful in Joburg!

Are you flying business class through work? You could alway chill out and have a nap in the Executive lounge.

Other than that I would say hop on a train and go for lunch in the big city.

I dont think there is anywhere to store luggage at LHR currently (re security risks), so unless you can check it right thru to your final destination, you might be stuck?

Also, if you have checked straight thru, can you even get landside, or are you stuck air side?

I would just buy into a lounge to behonest, but then i grew up in London so dont feel the need to do the sight seeing thing, if i did, i would probably jump a cab to Windsor and wander there if its a nice day. Really close.

Whatever you end up doing, heres wishing you a safe and stress free journey

If you are flying BA it's a doddle - as I recall it was a late evening departure, early morning arrival so that would give you a full day in London - plus their online check-in allows you to print off your boarding cards yourself, then all you have to do is fast drop your bags and have them ticketed all the way through.

Are you on a UK or Canadian passport? Be prepared for long queues for alien passport holders (i.e. non-EU) and long queues for security on the way back in. Check with your airline people or with the security people at LHR as to what kind of time margins you need to leave.

And then, get a one-day travel card for all zones at the underground ticketing office (it's about £5.30 or thereabouts) and it will allow you to use all underground/overground/bus services between the airport in the West all the way to the furthermost reaches of Essex and all of London in between. Much depends on how well you know the city and what you like to do or see. You can also look on the www.tfl.gov.uk website for all the various transport links between points of interest like how to get to Buckingham Palace and from there to the Tower of London and so on. Your day pass will allow you to get on and off buses at will, so you can just tour the centre, up and down Oxford St, Regent St., Trafalgar Square and so on for free. Soho and Covent Garden have a zillion restaurants - some are very pricey. Good little Italian places serve a nice set lunch at a fixed price. Look at www.toptable.co.uk for special deals.

If you'd like to PM me I can offer up more specific suggestions. :)

For a fairly cheap couple of hours take the tube to Sloan square and walk around the national army museum - Free entry and loads to do.:)
