That's not much of a moan ? You need more practise moaning, go to Etobicoke and fill up, that should do it
Does that sound more panic stricken? |

Gas is a lot more expensive in QC than it is in ON. It gets more expensive the further from ON you get. It's wickedly expensive in Montreal, which is bizarre. There is a refinery there and I imagine that is where the gas is produced. You can't really blame anything on transport costs!

Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
$1.399 last night when I filled up the truck. Went up $0.02 overnight. (Regulated gas prices in Newfoundland). Glad I have only 10 months lease on the truck left and don't drive far.;)

Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
It's broke through 1.50 some places in BC!
|
Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
http://gasbuddy.com is a useful and interesting site where one can research local gas prices. If I look back over the past 48 months for Newfoundland, we're nearing peak gas prices again. Which is a worry.

1.46 this morning, up 16 cents/liter since last week.
We are always about the same price as Vancouver, no advantage to living outside trans link's tax area. |

I quite agree. Come back and fuel up in the UK. That'll give you something to complain about. ;)
A simple bit of analysis: Gas is GBP 1.30 a litre in UK so thats about $2.4 a litre in C$ (using $1.85=GBP) Converting that to imperial gallons (4.5l) gives a cost of $10.83 a gallon. In contrast, gas in Canada is about $1.45 a litre so that's $6.52 a gallon. Or quite a bit less. But, if one looks at a rough average of MPG for cars/suv's in UK it's not unreasonable to suggest that one might average 45mpg. By contrast in Canada I'd suggest that average might be nearer 30mpg. Cars being having bigger engines, subject to stricter emissions controls and generally being less efficient. So taking 12000 miles a year as average driving distance, thats an annual cost of $2887 for the UK fuel consumption and $2608 for Canada. Which is only $300 or so different. Or not a lot in the great scheme of things. Of course, one can argue that Canadians drive greater distances than Brits - although I find I drive considerably less than in the UK as I can only go so far before falling off the edge of the Island - and play around with different vehicles and fuel consumptions to make the difference larger or smaller. You can also argue that car insurance in Canada is massively more expensive in the UK and would eat up any difference in gas cost and then some. Bottom line, for me, is that petrol is bloody expensive wherever you are. |

Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
Gasbuddy.com is your friend if you're travelling. I put in half a tank this morning and it was around $50. The way I look at it, how much do you think it would cost you to make 40 some litres of 87 octane from scratch? No takers? Jings? We have a good deal (my opinion), and the 90 cent dollar, political bs and provincial taxes explain part of the increase. Filling up at the discount station can save $8 or so.

Every station in town is the same exact price 99% of the time, that 1% someone isn't, its always 145.9 everywhere, but someone will put up 145.8. That is about all the savings around these parts. Makes me wish I was on the border still in Abbotsford, I'd go across and get gas, the city there is right on the border, go early or late in the day, and you can get across, get gas, and be back across in under 15 minutes. At current prices and adjusting for the exchange rate, would save me about 20 dollars a tank, so 40-80 a month, not huge, but not small either for me. |

Always an option but *generally* cars in North America come with larger, less fuel efficient engines than are available in Europe.

We have 1 native owned station, but they always price match the big guys, so they pass no savings onto the public.

Prices vary here, more expensive nearer the 401. Pioneer and ultramarine are usually cheapest. The gas stations on the three reserves all sell cheaper gas but it does have to be on or near your route to make it worthwhile.

Or people already have the smallest car possible within their budget and can't get much smaller without going to a motorcycle....
My car back home was 1.3 but I don't think it was really much more efficient overall. The savings were in driving low distance and insurance. To be honest if it was just me I'd get rid of the car. We probably pay about $450/mth total for insurance, gas, maintenance etc. I'd be able to function perfectly well with an $85 monthly bus pass and renting a car on a weekend occasionally if I had some longer distance to travel or was going to Big-Flatpack-Furniture-Store Incorporated for example. Of course, my wife sees things differently... |
Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
TBH I need a car for work as due to my hours public transit is not available all of the time even though I live in a decent sized city. A taxi one way would cost almost $50 and I work a 4 on 4 off so just one set of shifts would set me back $200. Taking transit back the other way and still paying $10 for 4 trips.
Of course we all become a bit lazier and if the car is on the drive or in the garage we tend to use it for journeys we could take transit or god forbid even walk  |

Now we have a car simply for necessity, not a large city, transit is very limited, and no real way around not having a car as the transit is just not worth even using. Luckily its not a large town, so a tank of gas can last us 2 weeks if we don't go to Vancouver, so its not so bad, but if we had to fill up weekly or more often, I'd dump the car again. I did buy a bike though and have been biking to work, work is only 2km away and on bike I can take a short cut, and its really not any faster by car. |
Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
Gas on the Island is still $1.39.9. I thought it might go back down after the Easter Break but - no.
|
Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
Err.. It was 99 cents a litre in Pt Huron, MI last time we filled up the truck on the way home from florida ;)
Its about 1.30 /l here in the GTA  Of course I could be paying €1.46 a litre in Malta. ($2.21 CAD / 1.19GBP) Also bad. |
Re: 2014 Gas price moaning thread
Went up to 146.9 today, first time ever I have had to pay over 70 dollars for a tank of gas, luckily it will last about 2 weeks, so its not frequent but I feel bad for those commuting to Whistler for work at these prices.
I could not imagine owning a large vehicle with a large tank if it cost 73 dollars for a Sunfire.. |
