Re the drink, it wasn't until 1970s that Dad ever had a drink at home. Maybe that's when we became middle class.

I think it means we weren't very close.

I seem to recall we (i.e. he) bought a bottle of Sanatogen every year for Christmas until the mid 60's.

Methodist approved health tonic, you see.

Really? My Dad used to knock back the Party Sevens with astonishing regularity. And my mum loved her Dubonnet and lemonades, I guess that made us posh.

Yeah, the Methodists used to buy their beer in jugs at the off sales to drink at home, can't be seen drinking in public.
