Meal for two at the Keg 70
18.5 meals at the keg or 20 weekends skiing for the same price.
The op was hoping to eat out twice a month. Still going to tell us that skiing would be THAT great an expense to her? And thats using sunshine as an example she could always get a Nakiska Pass instead.

130,000 is a great income for both places, although Calgary gets a nod for no sales tax and cheaper housing.
I find Vancouver is not much more expensive than Manchester. The silly real estate is largely on the west side of the city (average detached around 900,000 and over).
The further east you go, the prices drop dramatically. Coquitlam for instance is around 15 miles east of Vancouver and a nice detached 4 bed house of around 2000 sq feet is about 500,000 - 550,000 dollars. Not much more than a detached house in Manchester (guessing around 230 - 250 thousand pounds?).
Income tax is probably more or less the same.
Otherwise day to day costs are similar - some things less some things more. I imagine that 130,000 spends much like 70,000 quid (outside of london that is).

Yep. You live within your means do you not? Not that many years ago I earned £22K (03-04 I think). I wonder now how we managed to live - but we did, and I wouldn't have described it as 'tight' - we even had a holiday in Europe once.

One of my dad's favourite quips was that it is human nature to live just beyond one's means!

IainK said lifestyle was immaterial on that wage. I disagree and I don't think I'm wrong.
Ski pass is just one expense of skiing. If you are into it, there is equipment, if not rental equipment. I want a new pair of mid-fats- they are around $1K. Unfortunately I am not going to get my new pair of mid fats as guess what we can't afford them. Kids with helmets, gear to keep warm , skis, boots - all costs quite a bit. Kids lessons etc. Throw in a few trips elsewhere a year, eg Fernie etc and it all adds up -believe me. For a family of five you need a two bed condo at quite a lot of money per night etc.
I never ever said this lady and her family couldn't have a good lifestyle on $130K per year- I said lifestyle wasn't immaterial.
At $130K this family will pay high taxes and get none of the family tax breaks that other people get. Yes this family can definately live very comfortably on $130K per year, of course they can, to suggest otherwise would be ridiculous. BUT they won't be swimming in an endless sea of cash as everyone seems to think they will. Their income is nowhere near enough to live in Elbow Park etc.
